We offer tailored construction solutions, including planning, grading, excavating, culvert and utility installations.Primary Responsibility – Pipe Grade ControlShoot pipe elevations using laser levels, transits, or GPS equipmentEstablish and maintain invert elevations and slopes for:Storm sewerSanitary sewerWatermainsDirect excavator operators during trenching to achieve proper gradeContinuously check pipe placement to ensure:Correct slope (fall)AlignmentJoint elevation accuracySet and verify grade hubs, offset stakes, and benchmarksEnsure trench bottom and bedding meet design elevations before pipe installationMonitor and adjust grades throughout installation to avoid low/high spotsGeneral ResponsibilitiesInterpret civil drawings, profiles, and pipe schedulesWork closely with:Pipe crewsForemenSurveyorsEquipment operatorsCheck grades for:Excavation and backfillRoad subgrade and baseStructures (manholes, catch basins)Maintain grade stakes and layout control pointsIdentify and report discrepancies in plans or site conditionsKeep accurate field notes and measurementsQualifications5+ years’ experience as a Grades person with pipe-laying experienceStrong understanding of:Pipe installation practicesInvert calculations and slope (e.G.,
% grade)Experience using:Laser levels (pipe lasers preferred)Optical/transit levelsGPS systems (asset)Ability to read and interpret:Pipe profiles and sectionsElevation drawings and cut sheetsStrong math skills (grade, slope, elevations)Skills & CompetenciesHigh precision and attention to detail (critical for flow systems)Robust communication with operators and pipe crewAbility to work in trench environments and active excavationsProblem‑solving when site conditions differ from plansAbility to work under pressure with tight tolerancesWorking ConditionsOutdoor construction sites and trench workExposure to deep excavations and underground environmentsPhysically demanding (walking, climbing in/out of trenches)Variable weather conditions and extended hoursSafety ResponsibilitiesFollow trench safety and shoring requirementsMaintain safe distances from excavation edges and equipmentParticipate in hazard assessments and daily tailgate meetingsEnsure safe entry/exit practices in trenchesReport unsafe conditions immediatelyMust HavesExperience with pipe lasers and trenching operationsSurveying or layout experienceCSTS, WHMIS, Confined Space, Ground Disturbance Level IIValid driver’s license as you will be operating company vehiclesCompensationThis is a Unionized position with Norland - CSW 1611.
