Power BI Developer
Location: Concord / Vaughan, ON
Work Arrangement: On-site – 5 days per week
Duration: 3-Month Contract, with possibility of extension
Employment Type: T4A Contract
About the Opportunity
We are hiring on behalf of our client, a global leader in emissions control solutions serving the off-highway, industrial, and specialized vehicle markets. The company partners with leading engine manufacturers, OEMs, and aftermarket customers to deliver innovative environmental solutions.
We are seeking a hands-on Power BI Developer who can independently develop, modify, troubleshoot, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards, as well as write and optimize SQL queries to retrieve and prepare data.
This is a technical development role, not primarily a reporting coordination or business analyst position. The successful candidate should be comfortable working directly in Power BI Desktop and SQL Server, building reports from raw data, creating data models, writing DAX, and troubleshooting data and reporting issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain interactive Power BI dashboards and reports from start to finish.
- Write, modify, and optimize SQL queries to retrieve, join, filter, aggregate, and validate data from SQL Server and relational databases.
- Connect Power BI to SQL Server and other enterprise data sources.
- Build and maintain Power BI data models and semantic models.
- Create and modify DAX measures, calculated columns, and calculations required for reporting.
- Use Power Query for data transformation, cleansing, and preparation.
- Develop KPI dashboards and operational reports for different business functions.
- Troubleshoot Power BI reports, data refresh issues, incorrect results,
and performance problems.
- Optimize Power BI reports and SQL queries for performance and usability.
- Work with existing datasets and reports and make enhancements based on business requirements.
- Support Power BI On-Premises environments, including data gateway troubleshooting and configuration.
- Work with Microsoft Fabric as part of the organization's BI setting.
- Develop, modify, and maintain Crystal Reports when required.
- Validate data and ensure reporting outputs are accurate and consistent.
- Document data models, queries, reports, and technical solutions.
- Collaborate with business users and technical teams to understand requirements and deliver reporting solutions.
Required Technical Skills
Power BI – Required
- Strong hands-on Power BI development experience.
- Proven experience building Power BI dashboards and reports independently.
- Solid knowledge of Power BI Desktop.
- Hands-on experience with DAX.
- Hands-on experience with Power Query / M.
- Strong understanding of Power BI data modeling, including relationships and star schema concepts.
- Experience working with existing Power BI reports and modifying or troubleshooting them.
- Understanding of Power BI performance optimization.
SQL – Required
- Strong hands-on SQL experience.
- Ability to independently write SQL queries.
- Experience with SELECT, JOIN,
WHERE, GROUP BY, subqueries, CTEs, and aggregations.
- Experience working with SQL Server and relational databases.
- Ability to troubleshoot and validate data using SQL.
- Ability to write SQL queries that support Power BI reporting and data models.
Additional Technical Skills
- Experience with Power BI Gateway / On-Premises environments.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric.
- Experience with data integration and enterprise data sources.
- Crystal Reports experience is an asset, but not the primary focus of the role.
What We Are Looking For The ideal candidate is someone who:
- Builds Power BI reports themselves, rather than only managing or consuming reports.
- Can write SQL queries independently without relying heavily on others.
- Can take a reporting requirement and turn it into a working Power BI solution.
- Is comfortable working with raw or imperfect data and troubleshooting data issues.
- Understands how data flows from SQL → Power Query → Data Model → DAX → Power BI Report.
- Can explain their technical approach and walk through Power BI and SQL work they have personally completed.
- Is comfortable working independently in a fast-paced workplace.
Education
- Degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Business Intelligence, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Additional Information
- 3-month T4A contract, with possibility of extension.
- Fully on-site in Concord/Vaughan, Ontario – 5 days per week.
- Candidates must be comfortable working on-site every day.
- This position requires hands-on Power BI and SQL development experience.
