We’re looking for a Precast Design Engineer with strong structural engineering experience and a background in precast and prestressed concrete design.
Our client is a well-established engineering firm with a diverse portfolio of structural and precast concrete projects across Canada and the U.S. They are growing their engineering team and are looking for an experienced engineer who can contribute independently to technically complex projects while working closely with project teams, designers, and junior engineers.
The successful candidate will bring strong hands-on experience in reinforced concrete, precast/prestressed systems, and structural analysis and design, along with the ability to independently manage technical design requirements and contribute to complex projects.
Precast Design Engineer responsibilities:
- Perform structural analysis, design, and detailing for reinforced, precast, prestressed, and post-tensioned concrete structures
- Design precast and prestressed concrete floor systems and their supporting structural elements
- Work on both cast-in-place and precast/prestressed concrete structures, considering strength, serviceability, stability, and constructability
- Analyze and design post-tensioned concrete floors using bonded and unbonded post-tensioning systems
- Complete analysis, design, and detailing of precast concrete members and structural systems, including floors, walls, beams, columns, diaphragms, and connections
- Prepare structural calculations, design reports, engineering drawings, and technical documentation
- Apply seismic and lateral-load design principles to structural systems where required
- Interpret architectural, structural,
and project documentation and develop practical engineering solutions
- Review structural drawings, shop drawings, details, and BIM models to ensure compliance with engineering requirements
- Work closely with project engineers, drafters, detailers, BIM teams, and project managers throughout the design and delivery process
- Identify and resolve structural coordination, constructability, and design issues before they impact fabrication or construction
- Consider fabrication, transportation, erection, temporary conditions, and construction sequencing when developing precast solutions
- Participate in technical discussions with clients, contractors, consultants, and internal project teams
- Provide engineering support for RFIs, field issues, remedial work, and design modifications
- Support quality-control and independent checking processes for calculations, drawings, and engineering deliverables
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to EITs and junior engineering staff
The successful candidate has:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation
- 5+ years of structural engineering experience, ideally with significant experience in precast, prestressed, reinforced, or post-tensioned concrete
- Strong practical experience with precast and prestressed concrete floor systems and supporting elements
- Experience with both cast-in-place and precast concrete structures
- Experience with post-tensioned concrete using bonded and/or unbonded systems is an asset
- Strong understanding of structural analysis, concrete behaviour, connection design, and constructability
- Proficiency in structural analysis and design codes and standards, including CSA S16, CSA A23.3, National Building Code of Canada (NBC), ACI 318, and ASCE 7
- Familiarity with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is an asset
- Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as RFEM, RISA, ETABS, SAFE, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, CSI Column/SP Column, or similar platforms
- Experience with Revit, CAD, and/or CADwork; familiarity with BIM workflows is an asset
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with the ability to work through complex structural engineering challenges
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineers, designers, project managers, and clients
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience mentoring EITs or junior engineers is an asset
Compensation and benefits:
- Market-competitive salary based on experience and qualifications
- Comprehensive benefits package
- Opportunity to work on technically challenging precast, prestressed, reinforced, and post-tensioned concrete projects
- Exposure to projects across Canadian and U.S. markets
- Strong opportunity for professional and technical development
Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada. Only candidates selected to move forward in the hiring process will be contacted.
