Position SummaryManager, Workplace Department – North Slave Métis Alliance (NSMA). Office based work in Yellowknife, NT.Full-time, indeterminate employment. Wage: $103,500.00-$111,500.00 (under review).Reporting directly to the President, the Manager provides strategic leadership, operational oversight and technical direction for the NSMA Environment Department. The role advances protection and implementation of NSMA’s Aboriginal rights under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 while supporting environmental stewardship, regulatory participation and Indigenous-led economic development.Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & GovernanceLead the Environment, Land, and Natural Resources Department, setting vision, priorities and annual workplans.Provide strategic advice to NSMA leadership on environmental, regulatory, land, natural resources and rights-based matters.Ensure departmental work aligns with NSMA’s mandate and Section 35 rights.Represent NSMA in governance forums, advisory bodies and regulatory processes.Lead internal planning, risk management and continuous improvement.Regulatory Review, Consultation & Rights ImplementationOversight of NSMA participation in environmental assessments, land authorisations, land-use permits and water licensing.Oversee technical reviews under the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act and related frameworks.Maintain strong relationships with federal, territorial, Indigenous governments and regulatory boards.Program & Project ManagementOversee environmental monitoring, guardianship and on-the-land programmes.Lead project planning, implementation, reporting and evaluation.Integrate Traditional Knowledge and community priorities into environmental initiatives.Review SOPs, safety protocols and operational best practices.Financial & Funding ManagementDevelop and manage departmental budgets and multi-year financial plans.Oversee contribution agreements,
grants and funding proposals.Monitor expenditures and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.Support long-term financial sustainability and resource planning.Human Resources & Department ManagementSupervise departmental staff, including regulatory, conservation, liaison and technical roles.Lead recruitment, onboarding, performance management and staff scheduling.Provide coaching, mentorship and professional development opportunities.Foster a respectful, culturally grounded, collaborative and high-performing team environment.Build internal capacity through training, knowledge-sharing and succession planning.Qualifications and ExperienceEducationDegree or diploma in Engineering, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Indigenous Governance or a related field.Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.Experience5–10+ years of progressive experience in environmental management, regulation or a related field.Experience working with Indigenous governments or organisations is strongly preferred.Experience in:Supervising staff or leading multidisciplinary teams.Budgeting, funding proposals and contract oversight.Regulatory and environmental review processes.Program and project management.Scientific research, environmental monitoring and reporting.Knowledge and SkillsStrong understanding of Section 35 rights and Indigenous governance.Knowledge of northern regulatory regimes such as the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act and the Wildlife Act.Experience in consultation, negotiation and stakeholder engagement.Ability to integrate Traditional Knowledge with western science.Strong leadership,
organisational and financial management skills.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Proficiency in the full Microsoft Office suite and collaboration tools.Working ConditionsBased in Yellowknife with regular travel throughout the Northwest Territories.Frequent fieldwork in remote and outdoor environments.Exposure to extreme weather conditions and physically demanding environments.Travel may be required by small aircraft, watercraft or off-road vehicles.BenefitsTravel benefit of $3,699.80 per year added to the salary.Two weeks paid vacation in year 1 followed by three weeks paid vacation in year 2.After successful completion of a 3-month probationary period: pension, health and dental plan via the Northern Employee Benefits Service.Monthly phone allowance of $50.00 and health/fitness allowance of $100.00.Paid training and professional development.Provision of PPE and field gear including boots and winter clothing for the duration of employment.Additional RequirementsValid Class 5 driver’s licence.Ability to travel and work flexible hours.Physical capacity for fieldwork and on-the-land activities.Relevant safety certifications (e.G.
