Position Summary
Production Support plays an important role in supporting daily recycling operations at Scotia Recycling's Dartmouth facility. This position is responsible for assisting the Baler Operator, maintaining a clean and organized work environment, performing yard duties, and supporting production activities as required.
This role is ideal for an individual who is safety-conscious, dependable, physically fit, and eager to learn new skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong desire to develop within the recycling industry, including learning to operate mobile equipment and obtaining forklift certification.
Key Responsibilities
Production Support
- Assist the Baler Operator with daily production activities.
- Help prepare recyclable materials for processing and shipment.
- Sort and remove contaminants from recyclable materials as required.
- Support material movement throughout the facility.
- Ensure production areas remain clean, organized, and free of hazards.
- All other duties as assigned by the Site Manager.
Yard and Facility Maintenance
- Perform general housekeeping duties throughout the facility and yard.
- Collect and remove debris, litter, and recyclable materials from work areas.
- Assist with snow removal, sweeping, and seasonal yard maintenance activities.
- Support the maintenance of safe traffic flow and storage areas within the yard.
- Keep walkways, exits, and emergency access routes clear at all times.
Equipment Learning and Development
- Participate in training opportunities to learn facility operations and equipment.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn forklift operations and other mobile equipment.
- Assist trained operators when appropriate and under supervision.
- Complete all required safety and operational training programs.
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all company safety policies,
procedures, and safe work practices.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Immediately report hazards, incidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions.
- Maintain awareness of moving equipment and vehicle traffic throughout the facility.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent is considered an asset.
- Previous industrial, labour, manufacturing, recycling, construction, or warehouse experience is considered an asset but is not required.
- Strong commitment to health and safety.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
- Ability to take direction and follow instructions.
- Reliable, dependable, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Solid work ethic with the ability to complete assigned tasks and follow through on responsibilities.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically fit and capable of performing manual labour throughout the workday.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, and reaching.
- Ability to work safely in an active industrial environment.
- Ability to perform duties in varying weather and environmental conditions.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a recycling processing facility and outdoor yard environment.
- Regular exposure to dust, noise, moving equipment, and recyclable materials.
- Temperatures may fluctuate from hot to cold depending on the season and work location.
- Required to work indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
- Interaction with forklifts, balers, trucks, and other mobile equipment is common.
- The facility processes recyclable materials and employees must be comfortable working in this environment. Consistent with Scotia Recycling's other production roles, employees may be exposed to noise, dust, and changing environmental conditions.
