Salary Range: $85,000–$140,000; commensurate with experience

Position Description The Project Engineer – Landfill Gas & GHG leads Omni-McCann’s landfill gas practice including the design, permitting, and construction oversight of landfill gas collection and control systems together with greenhouse gas quantification and Workplace and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) reporting for our landfill clients. This role combines technical engineering design with hands-on field leadership, ensuring systems are engineered to regulatory standards and constructed to specification.
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering, direct landfill gas system experience, and demonstrated success managing construction projects from design through commissioning.
Landfill gas is a growth area for Omni-McCann; as such, the successful candidate should have a focus on landfill gas and GHG projects, but also an ability to support other aspects of the business, including one or both of the landfill civil engineering and design components, or the environmental monitoring and compliance component.
Key Responsibilities
Technical
- Design landfill gas collection systems, including wellfields, header piping, condensate management, and blower/flare stations
- Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports in compliance with applicable regulations
- Conduct gas system modeling and well-spacing analysis to optimize collection efficiency
- Quantify landfill methane generation and emissions using recognized models and methods (e.g., LandGEM, ECCC/IPCC methodologies) to support system sizing, facility planning, and client decision-making
- Prepare and submit annual greenhouse gas reports for landfill clients under ECCC’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program and applicable provincial requirements, and maintain the supporting data, calculations, and QA records
- Provide construction oversight, including contractor coordination, site inspections, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), and progress reporting
- Review and approve contractor submittals, shop drawings, and as-built documentation
- Support permitting efforts and liaise with regulatory agencies as needed
- Troubleshoot system performance issues and recommend design or operational improvements
- Collaborate with project managers, technical specialists, and operations/administrative staff to ensure project milestones and budgets are met
- Maintain accurate project documentation, including design calculations, field reports, and change orders
- Ensure all work complies with applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations
Operational
- Support client relationship development through technical/financial proposals and client meetings or presentations
- Mentor and directly oversee junior project team members
- Support development of corporate guidance documents, as requested by Senior Leadership
- Contribute engineering support to other Omni-McCann service lines as project needs require, including landfill monitoring, design, closure and post-closure planning, corrective action plans, and civil/geotechnical design
- Build the landfill gas and GHG service line — scoping and work-plan development, technical standards and templates, and identifying opportunities with existing landfill clients
- Build internal capability by training project and field staff on landfill gas system design, construction, and GHG quantification
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering (or related field)
- Minimum five years’ engineering experience including direct involvement in landfill gas system design, construction management, and/or landfill gas modelling; candidates with eight or more years and a record of leading a technical service line will be considered at the Senior Project Engineer level
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered, or immediately eligible for registration, with APEGA and/or APEGS
- Working knowledge of LFG collection and control system components (wells, headers, condensate sumps, blowers, flares, gas-to-energy interconnections)
- Familiarity with applicable regulatory frameworks, including federal greenhouse gas reporting and landfill methane requirements and provincial waste and air quality approvals in Alberta and Saskatchewan
- Proficiency with design and modeling software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GasSim, LandGEM, or similar) considered an asset
- Demonstrated experience quantifying greenhouse gas emissions and preparing regulatory GHG submissions — ECCC Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, provincial programs, or offset protocols
- Experience in other Company consulting areas (e.g., geotechnical/civil engineering) is an asset
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and client/regulator interaction (must be prepared to demonstrate technical and written communication skills during the interview process)
- Valid driver's license; willingness to travel to project sites as required
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with renewable natural gas (RNG) or landfill gas-to-energy projects
- Prior experience working directly for or with solid waste/landfill operators
Additional Information
- Reliable private transportation is required; personal vehicles may occasionally be used for job site travel
- Based out of the Edmonton or Saskatoon office, or fully remote position, with occasional travel throughout Western/Central Canada
- Landfill gas is an area of active growth for Omni-McCann rather than an established full workload; the role is structured as approximately half landfill gas and GHG reporting work, with the balance across solid waste, civil/geotechnical, and compliance projects, and we expect the landfill gas share to increase as the practice develops
- Overtime compensation and travel/per diem provided in accordance with applicable legislation and company policy
Working Conditions
- Combination of office-based design work and on-site field visits
- Field visits may involve exposure to outdoor conditions, uneven terrain, and active construction environments
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) required for site visits
- Ability to independently lift up to 50 lbs
- May require extended hours or work outside standard office hours

We offer a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience and aligned with industry standards. The posted range spans both the Project Engineer and Senior Project Engineer levels; placement reflects years of experience, professional registration, and the scope of the landfill gas and GHG portfolio the successful candidate takes on.
