Overview The Rapid Access Addiction Medicine Clinic offers support to individuals requiring help with substance use disorders. The clinic provides care for addiction issues, including assessments, counselling and prescription for medications that may help with lessening cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Many hospital inpatients also suffer from substance use disorders and the inpatient addiction medicine consult team provides addiction-specific assessments and treatments for this psychiatrically and medically complex population.

The Registered Practical Nurse in will work collaboratively within a team that includes an addiction medicine physician and other allied health professionals.

The Registered Practical Nurse, under direction of the physician, will conduct medical assessments, mental health, addictions and risk assessments and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions both for RAAM clinic outpatients as well as inpatients being assessed by the inpatient addiction consult team.

The RPN willprovide support and coverage to other programs in the Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Use portfolio based on operational needs.

Education

- Registered Practical Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Completion of a mental health and/or addiction nursing course from accredited college, or a commitment to attend and complete the education within one year of hire.
- Training with cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, interpersonal therapy, solution focused therapy and group therapy an asset.
- Life skill certificate is an asset.

Qualifications

- 2 years of recent relevant clinical experience in a mental health or medical setting preferably with experience in addiction nursing.
- Experience and competence with medical nursing, physical health assessment and management of acute intoxication and withdrawal.




- Demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed manner using well developed leadership, critical thinking, organizational and problem solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Computer proficiency required.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to patient and family centered care.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated passion for change and ongoing improvement in support of patient care and safety.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively within an interprofessional team environment.
- Demonstrated professionalism, accountability and positive attitude.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and educate patients and their families.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of recovery, harm reduction, addiction treatment, pharmacotherapy, and trauma informed approaches.
- Proficiency in the application of de-escalation and de-briefing skills.
- Demonstrated recovery-focused skills in bio-psychosocial assessment, mental status assessments, differential diagnosis, treatment and transitional care of mental health and addictions patients.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of legislation which guides mental health and addiction nursing practice (example, Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act).
