Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) — Stewiacke River Animal Hospital
Position Overview
Stewiacke River Animal Hospital in Halifax is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and team-oriented Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our veterinary healthcare team.
The successful candidate will play an important role in providing high-quality patient care while supporting our veterinarians, clients, and fellow team members. We are looking for someone who is confident in their technical abilities, passionate about animal welfare, and committed to creating a positive experience for both patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate, high-quality nursing care to hospitalized and outpatient patients.
- Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures.
- Perform RVT duties within the scope of provincial regulations and professional standards.
- Monitor patients under anesthesia and provide perioperative nursing care.
- Calculate and administer medications, fluids, and treatments as directed.
- Place and maintain intravenous catheters and collect blood, urine, and other diagnostic samples.
- Perform laboratory procedures, including bloodwork, urinalysis, cytology, and other in-house diagnostics.
- Take and process radiographs and assist with diagnostic imaging as required.
- Monitor hospitalized patients and accurately document medical findings and treatments.
- Provide surgical preparation, assistance, recovery, and post-operative care.
- Educate clients on medications, nutrition, preventative healthcare, post-operative care,
and treatment plans.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records.
- Ensure treatment areas, surgical suites, equipment, and hospital facilities are clean, organized, and properly maintained.
- Follow appropriate infection-control, biosecurity, and workplace safety protocols.
- Assist with inventory management and maintaining adequate medical and surgical supplies.
- Participate in client communication and provide exceptional customer service.
- Work collaboratively with veterinarians, RVTs, veterinary assistants, reception staff, and hospital management.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful, and supportive workplace culture.
Qualifications & Skills
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or eligibility for registration in Nova Scotia.
- Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology program.
- Strong knowledge of veterinary nursing procedures and patient care.
- Comfortable with anesthesia monitoring, venipuncture, catheter placement, laboratory diagnostics, and surgical nursing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in a busy clinical environment.
- Compassionate approach to patients and their owners.
- Ability to work independently while also being an effective member of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
- Previous small-animal veterinary hospital experience is an asset.
