WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY DO
You'll lead a one-hour club for up to 20 children, once a week, using a curriculum that's already written, tested and packed into a kit for you.
Each session is part show, part experiment, part organised chaos. You demonstrate, they get their hands dirty, everyone takes something home.
Clubs run at lunchtime or straight after school, one hour a week, for eight weeks at a time. You get to know the same group across the term,
which is the part most leaders end up enjoying most.
Lead the session using our prepared curriculum and kit
Set up and pack down — allow around 15 minutes either side
Keep the room secure, engaged and moving
Collect your kit before the session and return it after
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
You're comfortable in front of a group of children and can hold their attention
You're reliable — the club runs whether or not you feel like it
You have your own vehicle. This is not negotiable — you'll be transporting a full kit box to and from each school
You can commit to the same days each week for a full term
You'll complete a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check before your first session
Experience with children is an asset — camp counselling, coaching,
tutoring, babysitting, scouting and lifeguarding all count. A science background helps but isn't required. We've had excellent club leaders from theatre, education, engineering and nursing.
WHAT YOU GET
$55 per session, paid bi-weekly
Mileage reimbursed on any trip beyond 20 km, though most schools are closer than that
Paid training before you start, and a curriculum you don't have to write
Real experience in public speaking, classroom management and science communication — the kind that's worth something on an application to teachers' college, med school or anywhere else A job where the worst thing that happens is a slime spill
ABOUT US
Mad Science has been running hands-on science programmes for children since 1985. Mad Science Maritimes delivers weekly clubs,
birthday parties, school assemblies, workshops and summer camps across Nova Scotia — as entertaining as they are educational, which is the only way to teach science to a seven-year-old.
