Lead API Developer — Payment Systems | Toronto

We're hiring a Lead API Developer for a payment platform modernization project at a major Canadian bank in Toronto.

This is a leadership role, not a hands-on coding seat. You'll own code quality and architecture decisions for payment API development, not write the bulk of the code yourself.

What you'll do:

Lead code reviews and set architecture direction for payment APIs. Mentor junior developers and set the coding standards the team works to. Explain technical trade-offs to business and senior leadership in plain language. Own the quality and security of payment API implementations. Work on integrations across SWIFT, ACH, card networks, EFT, and E-transfer. Keep implementations compliant with encryption, tokenization, PII handling, and regulatory requirements.

What you need:

5+ years in cloud development, AWS preferred.



A real understanding of payment processing and API calls. Payment rail experience (ACH, SWIFT, WIRE, EFT, E-transfer) is a strong plus. The ability to walk a VP through a technical constraint and hold your ground with confidence. Deep code review skills: architecture, security, performance. Banking or financial services background helps, but robust payment API experience can substitute.

Nice to have:

PCI-DSS compliance experience. Background with settlement systems and reconciliation.

Details:

Toronto, on-site 2 days a week near Yonge and Bay. 6-12 month contract, with a contract-to-hire path.
