Company Description

Materia Bioworks is an early-stage startup building a turnkey solution for bringing sustainable products to market. Our platform combines a materials informatics tool with a network of suppliers and service providers, helping product developers launch sustainable products without compromising functionality or cost.

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to join our growing team to develop biopolymer based products. In this role, you will bring deep, practical knowledge of polymer processing on pilot and commercial-scale equipment, including injection molding, blown film, coatings, and other extrusion techniques, and apply it across our internal R&D; practices and direct client engagements. You will be a trusted technical resource embedded in scale-up and validation work, helping ensure product development engagements translate from lab to commercial production.

You will be required to operate independently, and communicate clearly with both internal teams and external clients.

Responsibilities

- Plan and run trials on pilot and commercial equipment (ours and partners'), collecting the process and material data needed to validate performance.
- Work directly with clients on active product development engagements, providing technical guidance through formulation, pilot testing, and scale-up to de-risk the path to commercial production.
- Build prototypes to test design concepts, validate functionality, and confirm manufacturability ahead of scale-up.
- Maintain rigorous documentation of trials, specs, and results, and ensure products meet quality standards and relevant industry regulations throughout their lifecycle.
- Serve as our in-house authority on polymer and biopolymer processing across injection molding, blown film, coatings, and other extrusion techniques, advising on process selection, troubleshooting, and optimization.
- Communicate findings clearly to internal scientists, engineers, and leadership, and coordinate effectively with external manufacturers, suppliers,

and testing labs.

Qualifications

Required

- Bachelor's degree in Polymer Science, Plastics Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of hands-on industry experience in polymer or biopolymer product development and manufacturing.
- Practical, hands-on experience across multiple manufacturing techniques such as: injection molding, blown film extrusion, coatings, and/or other extrusion processes.
- Proficiency in materials characterization and end-product testing.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable formulation or process changes.
- Excellent communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work directly with clients as well as internal technical and leadership teams.
- Comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy and ownership.
- Experience managing or coordinating external manufacturing teams across multiple locations.
- Willingness and ability to travel, and to regularly work in office at our lab at Lambton College in Sarnia, ON.

Preferred:
- Proven experience working with and processing biopolymers or other bio-based/natural materials (PLA, PBAT, PHA, PBS, and similar) strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in a client-facing or consulting engineering role.
- Experience supporting or contributing to process modeling or predictive manufacturing initiatives.

What We Offer

- The chance to make a meaningful contribution to sustainability and climate impact through material science.
- A high-trust, high-autonomy role with direct influence over both internal R&D; direction and client outcomes.
- Competitive compensation and benefits package.
- Remote-friendly flexibility, balanced with regular hands-on lab time in Sarnia, ON.
- Professional development opportunities and a real voice in our technology roadmap.
- Potential for equity in an early-stage startup through our employee stock options pool.
