ABOUT POWER-TEK
POWER-tek is a specialist power system engineering consultancy with approximately 35 years of global experience in power system planning, engineering, and advisory services. We support utilities, system operators, transmission owners, developers, and regulators with technical studies that underpin reliable grid operation and long-term network development. We are currently expanding our North American bench to support active projects, client proposals, and upcoming bidding opportunities.
POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking Senior Power System Planning & Operations Experts to lead and deliver transmission planning, system operability, and dynamic performance studies for North American utilities and ISOs/RTOs.
This is a senior technical role for engineers who have personally executed — not merely managed — complex load flow, stability, and interconnection studies, and who can stand behind their results in front of a client, a regulator, or a reliability coordinator. You will contribute to technical delivery, quality review, and proposal development, with the level of involvement scaled to your availability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Studies
- Perform steady-state load flow, contingency (N-1, N-1-1), and thermal/voltage performance assessments for transmission networks.
- Conduct transient stability, small-signal stability, and voltage stability (PV/QV) analyses, including determination of transfer limits, SOLs, and IROLs.
- Execute electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies for inverter-based resource (IBR) integration, control interaction screening, weak-grid performance, and harmonic/temporary overvoltage assessment.
- Support generation and storage interconnection studies, including system impact studies (SIS), facilities studies, and connection impact assessments (CIA).
- Develop, validate, and benchmark power flow and dynamic models; reconcile PSS/E and PSCAD model behaviour where required.
- Evaluate transmission reinforcement alternatives, including technical screening, staging, and comparative assessment of options.
Operations & Reliability
- Carry out system operability, reliability, and adequacy assessments in support of operational planning and seasonal studies.
- Assess compliance against NERC Reliability Standards (TPL, FAC, MOD, PRC families) and NPCC Directories and criteria.
- Interpret and apply ISO/RTO and utility-specific planning criteria, procedures, and market rules.
Delivery, Advisory & Business Development
- Author clear, defensible technical reports and present findings to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
- Provide independent technical review and QA/QC of study work produced by others.
- Contribute technical content, methodology, and level-of-effort input to proposals, bids, and pre-qualification submissions.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on advisory assignments, expert reviews,
and second-opinion engagements.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on study methodology and modelling practice.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Master's degree in Power Systems is an asset.
- Preferably 20+ years of relevant experience in power system planning, operations planning, or transmission studies. Candidates with strong, directly comparable experience at a somewhat lower tenure will be considered.
- Demonstrated experience working with or for utilities, ISOs/RTOs, transmission owners, or transmission system operators in North America.
- Working knowledge of NERC and NPCC reliability requirements and how they translate into study scope, criteria, and acceptance thresholds.
- Proven ability to independently scope, execute, and document technical studies with minimal supervision.
- Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills in English.
- Eligibility to work in [Canada / the United States] or to contract as an independent consultant in the relevant jurisdiction.
SOFTWARE EXPERIENCE Solid, hands-on proficiency is required in the following:
- PSS/E — load flow, contingency, dynamic simulation, Python/IPLAN automation
- PSCAD / EMTDC — EMT studies, IBR control interaction, weak-grid and TOV assessment
- DSA-Tools (TSAT / VSAT) — transient and voltage stability, transfer limit determination
Familiarity with any of the following is considered an asset: PSLF, PowerFactory, CYME, ASPEN/CAPE, ETAP, PLEXOS, MUST/TARA, and scripting in Python.
