Job Title: Senior Process Engineer – Pulp & Paper

Location: Ottawa, ON (Home Office) – up to 25% travel to client sites across Canada & USA
Employment Type: Short-Term Contract – 4 months (immediate start, renewable/extendable) Compensation: $100 – $140 CAD per hour (approx. $16,000 – $22,500 CAD/month)

About the Role We are seeking an independent, seasoned Senior Process Engineer to lead process design and optimization projects within pulp and paper operations. Operating primarily (75%) from a home office in the Greater Ottawa area, you will work effectively with minimal supervision while dedicating the remaining 25% to commercial travel for field investigations across North America. You will assess existing systems, develop tailored engineering interventions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives from concept to technical execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed process engineering calculations, including complex heat and mass balances for pulp and paper mill systems.
- Develop, review, and optimize Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs;).
- Evaluate existing mill process systems to identify optimization, debottlenecking, and upgrade opportunities.
- Support process control strategies,
optimize automated systems, and prepare equipment specifications and sizing calculations.
- Execute field investigations, site walkdowns, and data collection during client site visits (requires availability for short-notice travel).
- Liaise with client operations and cross-functional teams to define project scopes, troubleshoot operational challenges, and mentor junior engineers.
- Produce comprehensive technical reports and design memoranda while ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards, codes, and safety regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 15 years of relevant process engineering design experience specifically within the pulp and paper industry.
- Strong proficiency in heat and mass balance calculations, utilizing both hand calculations and simulation tools.
- Practical expertise across diverse process areas
- Advanced analytical skills for root-cause analysis and data-driven decision-making in an industrial environment.
- Willingness and eligibility to travel to operating plant environments across Canada and the USA.
- Qualified Engineering designation (P.Eng.) in a Canadian province is strongly preferred.
Preferred Assets
- Experience with process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, WinGEMS, CADSIM, or similar tools.
- Familiarity with the kraft mill chemical recovery cycle (recausticizing, recovery boilers, etc.).
- Proven track record working independently on a contract or consulting basis in the sector.
- Existing network or contacts within Canadian and US pulp and paper mills.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is a strong asset
