Senior Reliability Engineer – Auto Mills
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Reliability Engineer – Auto Mills to provide technical leadership and reliability support for fixed-plant milling operations. This role will focus on improving the reliability, availability, and performance of grinding and associated process equipment through condition monitoring, failure analysis, maintenance strategy optimization, and continuous improvement.
The successful candidate will have strong hands-on experience in a mining or mineral processing environment, with particular expertise in SAG/AG/Ball Mills and associated equipment. The role requires someone capable of independently identifying reliability risks, developing practical solutions, and driving initiatives from analysis through implementation with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Reliability & Asset Performance
- Lead reliability improvement initiatives for Auto Mills and associated grinding circuit equipment.
- Monitor and analyze equipment performance using Availability, MTBF, MTTR, downtime, failure frequency, and maintenance cost.
- Identify recurring and emerging failure modes and develop corrective actions to improve equipment reliability.
- Develop and optimize preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance strategies.
- Review maintenance history, inspection results, condition-monitoring data, and operational trends to identify reliability risks.'
Mill & Fixed Plant Reliability
- Provide technical reliability support for mills, gearboxes, pinions, bearings, lubrication systems, feed systems, pumps, cyclones, screens, chutes, and associated equipment.
- Support mill liner condition monitoring, wear analysis, inspections, and replacement strategies.
- Review vibration, thermography, oil analysis, NDT, and other condition-monitoring results.
- Develop equipment health assessments and recommendations for upcoming maintenance and shutdown activities.
- Work closely with Operations,
Maintenance, Planning, Engineering, and OEM/vendor representatives to resolve equipment performance issues.
Root Cause Analysis & Continuous Improvement
- Lead and facilitate Root Cause Analysis (RCA/RCFA) for significant and repetitive equipment failures.
- Apply structured failure-analysis methodologies to identify physical, human, and systemic causes.
- Track corrective actions through completion and verify their effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities to extend component life, reduce unplanned downtime, and improve maintenance efficiency.
- Support defect elimination and bad-actor equipment programs.
Maintenance Strategy & Planning Support
- Review and improve PM strategies, inspection requirements, job plans, and maintenance intervals.
- Support development of long-range maintenance and component replacement strategies.
- Provide reliability input into weekly, monthly, shutdown, and long-range maintenance planning.
- Ensure maintenance strategies reflect equipment criticality, failure history, OEM requirements, and operating conditions.
Reporting & Technical Leadership
- Develop clear reliability dashboards, reports, equipment health summaries, and management recommendations.
- Communicate reliability risks and priorities to maintenance and operational leadership.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to reliability engineers, technicians, planners, and maintenance personnel.
- Manage assigned reliability initiatives independently from problem identification through implementation and performance verification.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Significant reliability and maintenance experience within mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial operations.
- Strong direct experience with SAG/AG/Ball Mills and grinding circuit equipment.
- Demonstrated experience leading RCA/RCFA investigations and defect-elimination initiatives.
- Solid understanding of condition monitoring, including vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermography, inspections, and equipment health trending.
- Experience developing and managing reliability KPIs including Availability, MTBF, MTTR, and equipment downtime.
- Strong analytical, technical reporting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize reliability risks, and deliver high-quality results with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with SAP, Maximo, or similar CMMS/EAM systems.
- Experience with Power BI or other data visualization and analytics platforms.
- Knowledge of Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), FMEA/FMECA, and criticality analysis.
- Experience supporting major mill shutdowns, liner replacements, and component change-outs.
- Experience working with OEMs and specialized condition-monitoring vendors.
- Professional Engineering designation or eligibility is considered an asset.
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on fixed-plant reliability experience with excellent analytical and communication skills. They are comfortable working in the field, analyzing equipment and maintenance data, facilitating technical investigations, and presenting recommendations to management.
