Trail Specialist Position Overview We are seeking a Trail Specialist to join our trail building and natural resource construction team.

Trail

Specialists work on a wide range of projects including trail construction, structural bridges, boardwalks, erosion control systems, and stream restoration across diverse landscapes. This role combines skilled hand-crew work, carpentry, rock work, and the operation of tools and equipment to build sustainable outdoor infrastructure that protects the landscape while improving public access.

Trail Specialists work closely with Trail Crew Leaders and Coordinators to complete projects safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. Depending on experience, team members may also assist with equipment operation, mentoring newer crew members, and supporting field training. Level and compensation are determined based on experience and demonstrated skills during the hiring process.

Key Responsibilities

- Trail Construction Construct and maintain sustainable trail systems including hiking, mountain biking, and multi-use trails while meeting project specifications and environmental standards.
- Drainage & Erosion Control Install and restore drainage features such as water bars, grade dips, drains, check dams, and ditches to manage water flow and prevent trail erosion.
- Trail Corridor Maintenance Clear and maintain trail corridors by removing vegetation, trees, and blowdowns while maintaining proper trail width, visibility, and safety.
- Timber & Structural Construction Build and install wooden bridges, puncheon, boardwalks, and other timber structures used in trail infrastructure.
- Stonework & Retaining Structures Install stone staircases, step stones, and retaining walls using proper rock placement, dry-stacking methods, and quarrying techniques.
- Tool & Equipment Operation Safely operate chainsaws, brush saws, drills, and other hand and power tools used in trail construction and maintenance.
- Rigging & Material Movement Use rigging systems such as griphoists, rope winches,



and mechanical systems to move rocks, logs, soil, and other heavy materials on job sites.
- Small Equipment Operation Operate small equipment such as power wheelbarrows and assist with equipment operations when required under the direction of the Site Foreman or Trail Coordinator.
- Lumber Milling & Carpentry Mill lumber or logs using chainsaws and perform carpentry tasks related to trail structures and construction projects.
- Site Awareness & Safety Reporting Identify and document trail safety concerns, maintenance needs, and environmental considerations to support future project planning.
- Crew Support & Training Assist Trail Crew Leaders with mentoring newer crew members and volunteers while maintaining a productive and collaborative work workplace.
- Safety & Compliance Follow OSHA standards and company safety protocols while maintaining protected working practices on active construction sites and in backcountry environments.

Minimum Qualifications

- At least one year of relevant experience in trail work or a related field such as landscaping, construction, forestry, outdoor recreation, or property maintenance
- Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and crew members
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, chainsaws, and power tools (training provided for certifications)
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a crew in outdoor environments
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs over uneven terrain
- Comfortable working outdoors in remote, physically demanding conditions
- Ability to camp on project for up to four nights per week when required




- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

- Two to five years of experience in trail construction, outdoor infrastructure, or related construction fields
- Experience with carpentry, timber construction, or rock work
- Chainsaw certifications
- Wilderness First Aid or Standard First Aid
- Experience operating small equipment or working around heavy machinery
- Experience working on public lands (e.g., National or State Parks)
- Familiarity with erosion control, water mitigation, and environmental best practices
- Welding or fabrication experience
- GIS, cartography, photography, or field documentation skills
- CDL License

Working Conditions

- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including steep, wet, and uneven terrain
- Work is physically demanding and requires standing, bending, crouching, lifting, and carrying loads up to 50 pounds over difficult terrain
- Employees frequently work on natural ground surfaces and in rugged backcountry environments
- Work environments may include noise, dust, grease, and conditions typical of active construction sites
- Employees regularly work near heavy equipment, moving machinery, and suspended loads
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, harnesses, and other safety gear is required daily
- Travel to project sites is required and may include extended stays near the job site
- Lodging may be provided through Airbnb accommodations when available or through camping near remote project locations when necessary
