About The Role We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join GitHub's Core UX organization, which owns the frontend platform behind GitHub.com. This role is pivotal in setting the technical direction for the platform, ensuring it remains fast, accessible, consistent, and reliable at scale.

As a systems-level engineer, you will work across multiple teams to address overlapping concerns such as performance, accessibility, UX consistency, and platform availability. Your work will involve evolving a large, actively developed codebase, focusing on migration strategies, cross-team alignment, and architecture enhancements rather than starting from scratch. You will collaborate closely with senior engineering leadership, product managers, and designers to shape the future of GitHub’s frontend infrastructure, driving initiatives that impact millions of developers worldwide.

Success in this role involves leading large-scale cross-team projects, establishing scalable patterns, and mentoring engineers to elevate the overall quality and efficiency of frontend development across the organization.

Qualifications

- 9+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, with proven experience in maintaining and delivering production software using languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
- OR an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, or related fields with 8+ years of relevant experience in software development.
- OR a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field with 7+ years of experience in software engineering.
- OR a Master’s Degree in relevant fields with 5+ years of experience.
- OR a Doctorate in relevant fields with 3+ years of experience.
- Equivalent experience will also be considered.

Responsibilities

- Own the technical direction for GitHub’s web UI platform, focusing on performance, accessibility, UX consistency, and platform availability.
- Drive large cross-team initiatives, including platform migrations, sequencing work to ensure seamless transitions without disrupting active development.
- Establish and promote patterns, standards,

and paved paths that simplify frontend development and scale across multiple teams.
- Develop architecture and design proposals, evaluate tradeoffs, and build consensus among engineering, product, and design stakeholders.
- Mentor engineers at all levels through code reviews, design discussions, and pairing to elevate team capabilities.
- Represent frontend platform priorities to leadership, advocating for necessary resources and support to achieve strategic goals.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure platform evolution aligns with organizational objectives and user needs.

Benefits

- Competitive salary packages and comprehensive health benefits.
- Versatile remote work arrangements, supporting work-life balance.
- Generous learning and development programs to foster continuous growth.
- Opportunities to work on impactful projects that influence millions of developers globally.
- Inclusive and diverse workplace culture that values innovation and collaboration.
- Paid time off, wellness programs, and employee resource groups to support well-being.
