Position Summary:

The leader of Terminal Operations is tasked with the responsibility of the business areas through various aspects of commercial, operational, and corporate landscape of the organization. The leader of Terminal Operations not only strives towards a consistent trajectory of growth, while avoiding obstacles that arise from constantly shifting realities of our business; monitors the progress of achieving the objectives and targets set.
The leader will be expected to oversee all aspects of Port Operations as well as all shoreside services in support of vessel performance and schedule integrity
Level of Responsibility
Leading projects/workstreams, and responsible for outcomes/strategic impact on department or business unit performance. May have direct reports, mentoring others, driving innovation, and improving processes within their domain.
Key Tasks
- Develops, establishes, and maintains business relationships with port terminals and port captains
- Develops, builds, and maintains constructive business relationships with key stakeholders (internally and externally)
- Manage port operations expenses and ensure TSA rates, contracts are in place and rates applied.
- Actively collaborates with Port Authorities, including operations department, terminals and all vendors.
- Team Management: develop and maintain a highly motivated and productive team to meet department objectives and deadlines through, coaching, training, and motivating the team
- Manage employee performance for direct reports including setting objectives, providing clear feedback, and conducting performance evaluations
- Efficiently manages the financial and material resources available
- Plans human resources needs and hires new resources
- Analyze situations globally to identify the links between the elements that compose it, to perceive the issues, trends, risks, and opportunities they represent
- Anticipate likely impacts and obstacles, takes calculated risks and provides alternative scenarios, even in situations marked by adversity and ambiguity
- Make significant efforts to achieve the objectives of its department. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of the progress of the files as well as the results obtained
- Transmit and share information to foster a good understanding of organizational directions, objectives, and issues by all stakeholders so that they can effectively fulfill their share of responsibilities.
- Communicate a stimulating and enthusiastic vision of directions and goals to be achieved in a way that engages people, stimulates the desire to excel and promotes action through
- Create and maintain a collaborative work setting between people
- Recognize and highlight individual and collective contributions
- Build positive interpersonal relationships with employees by adopting a mode of communication marked by openness and respect for opinions
- Identify mutually beneficial solutions for those involved in the issues. Maneuver effectively to get different parties to reconcile their views and foster the emergence of win-win solutions
- Exercise adequate control of stress and emotions in difficult situations
Skills / Experience: All MSC Canada employees are expected to exhibit the MSC Values, striving to drive customer centric results in all interactions with colleagues and customers alike.
- University degree in a related field
- University training in management is considered an important asset
- Knowledge of the port operations is an important asset
- 3-5 years’ managerial skills (with and/or without direct reports), including leading successful teams, resource planning,
time management and priority assessment capabilities
- A solid business strategy approach to working, having already demonstrated (i.e. business case proposals, etc.…) and attained defined business goals.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (i.e... Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and technical ease
- Exceptional diplomacy, communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with a variety of people at all levels
- Ability to make rational decisions in difficult and critical situations
