Position Summary
White Coral Offshore Services Ltd. is seeking a UT Level I or higher technician with ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) experience for casual, on-call assignments.
The technician will primarily perform ultrasonic thickness measurements of ship hulls and structural members, as well as marine/offshore structures, tanks, piping systems, and other steel components. Work will be project-based and scheduled as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform ultrasonic thickness measurements of ship hull plating, decks, bulkheads, tanks, frames, stiffeners, and other structural members
- Perform thickness measurements of piping systems and other steel components where required
- Identify measurement locations based on drawings, measurement plans, and inspection instructions
- Prepare inspection surfaces by cleaning, scaling, or removing coating where required
- Calibrate, verify, and operate ultrasonic thickness measurement equipment in accordance with approved procedures
- Accurately record measurement locations and readings
- Identify and report abnormal readings, pitting, substantial corrosion, or apparent structural deficiencies to the responsible supervisor
- Prepare field notes, sketches, and measurement records and assist with preparation of UTM reports
- Follow company procedures, classification society requirements, client requirements, and applicable inspection standards
- Properly maintain and handle UTM equipment
- Comply with PPE requirements, confined-space procedures, and site-specific safety requirements
Qualifications & Requirements
- Valid CGSB / CAN-CGSB-48.9712 UT Level I or higher certification, or equivalent certification acceptable to the applicable classification society, in the relevant industry sector
- Minimum one year of documented,
tutored on-the-job experience in ultrasonic thickness measurement
- Practical knowledge of ultrasonic thickness measurement techniques and equipment
- Knowledge of ship structures and ability to identify structural members and representative measurement locations
- Ability to read ship structural drawings, thickness measurement plans, and inspection instructions
- Ability to accurately record and document thickness measurements
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Robust attention to detail and accurate record keeping
- Physically fit and capable of:
- Climbing ladders and gangways
- Entering and working in confined spaces
- Working at heights
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Preferred
- Previous thickness measurement experience on ships, barges, tugs, or other marine structures
- Previous experience working with a classification society or class-approved thickness measurement company
- Experience using multiple-echo ultrasonic thickness gauges
- UT Level II certification
- Confined Space Entry and Fall Protection training
- Marine Basic Safety (MED) or equivalent marine safety training
- Valid driver's licence and reliable transportation
Employment Conditions
- Casual / on-call position
- Project-based assignments
- Work may include evenings, weekends, and short-notice assignments
- Local travel and occasional out-of-town assignments may be required
- Hourly rate based on certification and relevant UTM experience
