Qualifications

MINIMAL FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED:

- Masters degree in a related study area.

OR
- Bachelors degree or completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with three years = directly-related experience.

EXPERIENCE:

- Lab Technology Certificate (eg RRCC).
- Minimum 3 years experience in research lab conducting independent work, 5 years preferred with particular focus on pgysiology and pathophysiology.
- Standard cell and molecular biology methods (PCR analysis, protein analysis, tissue histology, and cell culture).
- Significant experience with live animal research, including surgical techniques and measurement of cardio or pulmonary physiology.
- Experience in management related to biosafety, animal ethics and human ethics and be capable of leading preparation and renewal of protocols and certifications.
- Experience working independently to plan and complete experiments, and in analyzing data and preparing publication/presentation-ready figures and tables.
- Experience in training and supervising research trainees and serving as a liaison in collaborative research projects is required.
- Experience writing scientific methods and results is an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Excellent manual dexterity for microdissection of tissues is required.
- Preparation of routine lab buffers and solutions, for small molecule pharmacologic inhibitors, and calculation of formula for these solutions is required.




- Ability to use computer software for document and figure preparation (eg. MS Word, Excell, PowerPoint) and statistical analyses (eg. GraphPad Prism) is required.
- Ability to work independently, including planning of studies with appropriate controls is required.
- Excellent communication skills - written and oral - for dissemination of data and research approaches to other group members is required.
- Ability to work as an effective team member is required.
- Routine sterile cell culture protocols, and preparation of cell culture associated reagents is required.
- Completing immunoblotting experiments – include protein cell lysates, protein assay, optimizing antibody dilutions, and densitometry enhanced chemi-luminescence film images is required.
- Completing PCR analyses – include sample preparation, designing and ordering primers, optimizing protocols using multiple thermal cycler instruments, analysing data for presentation is required.
- A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

- Prepare solutions and chemical reagents required for studies.
- Design, complete and analyze cell culture experiments using protein assays, immunoblotting, and qRT-PCR for data mining (co-ordination with students.
- Manage human lung cell cryo-repository: maintaining liquid nitrogen in storage tanks; curating cell storage database; growing cells for the purpose of maintain cell stocks; preparing new primary cells cultures for human bio-specimens as needed.
- Organize lab ordering requirements – providing order lists to shared administrator.
- Lead compliance initiatives for biosafety and environmental health and safety policy, working with EHSO officers as needed.




- Develop and optimize a variety of cell and molecular biology based assays as needed (eg. luciferase assay, lipidomics).
- Provide support for murine lung function studies, including operation of core equipment (ventilators), and managing facility when lab director is on vacation or away.
- Develop and manage group SOPs for human lung processing, working with other investigators to ensure research readiness for sample processing and handling, and the preparation of cell culture, tissue preparations, and biosample repositories. This includes record keeping and communication with external tissue donor organization (IIAM).
- Provide cell culture and biological models/protocols support in new exposure facilities associated with AirSAFE. Includes coordination of schedules, optimizing and curation of protocols, and leading communication and coordination of research activities across three core lab units in AirSAFE.
- May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
