The City of Swift Current is inviting applications for the position of Journeyman Power Line Technician. Under the supervision of the Director of Light & Power, this position is responsible for service, maintenance and repair of most aspects of the utility operation including overhead and underground distribution systems, streetlight systems, traffic control systems, metering, transformation, substations and associated switchgear devices.
Key Position Responsibilities Service and maintain the distribution system as required or by instruction from the Director of Light & Power and/or Technical Superintendent.
Maintain and repair overhead and underground 5KV and 25KV distribution lines, secondary lines and streetlight circuits.
Perform 138KV transmission and 25KV distribution switching or sectionalizing as directed.
Attend all trouble calls, taking whatever action is necessary to restore service as soon and as safely as possible.
Carry out load and voltage checks by clip‑on ammeters, maxi meters and recording instruments.
Read and interpret blueprints and schematic diagrams in relation to standard single phase and three phase transformer connections, streetlight controls, switches and relays, single and three phase metering, metering equipment, current and potential transformers.
Read kilowatt hour and demand meters as required.
Connect and disconnect customer meters, record readings, meter data, etc.
Follow up on customer complaints and inquiries.
Perform work on dead or energized overhead and underground 5KV and 25KV secondary lines, using rubber gloves, hot line tools and other protective equipment as required.
Keep trucks,
tools and safety equipment in first‑class condition.
Operate digger/derrick equipment for the purpose of digging holes, pole erection and maintenance of fixtures and equipment.
Operate trenching equipment for the purpose of underground distribution systems, etc.
Maintain records of materials used, job orders and materials returned to stores from job orders.
Be available for standby as required.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Qualifications Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate, or in the process of completion within the calendar year.
Valid Class 5 and Class 3A driver’s licence required.
Valid Class 1A driver’s licence preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Physical aptitude to perform the job.
Working knowledge of line staking, pole grading, pole setting, pole line hardware and framing, anchoring and guying, circuit arrangement, conductor sagging and stringing.
Working knowledge of underground distribution systems, cable terminations splicing, etc.
Working knowledge of substation switchgear devices and associated direct current equipment.
Basic understanding of operating and maintaining traffic light systems.
Demonstrated ability to safely and competently perform power line work at the journeyperson level.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to cooperate and deal tactfully with others.
Strong customer service especially when dealing with the public.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions Physical Effort: Considerable; requires physical strength and stamina. May be required to work in difficult positions for extended periods.
Physical Environment: Daily exposure to safety hazards requiring proper equipment, training and adherence to protocol. Exposure to various weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain or wind. Emergencies or outages may require working outside of daylight hours.
Sensory Attention: High level of visual attention to identify hazards and assess infrastructure. High level of auditory attention required for diagnosing issues and maintaining safety, as well as communicating clearly with team members. Mental clarity and focus to avoid distractions, reduce errors and maintain a safe workplace.
