Summary: Personal Support Workers are governed under the “Unregulated Care Providers’ (UCP category as identified by the College of Nurses. The Personal Support Worker assists and supports the nursing process utilizing the knowledge, skills and abilities that they acquire during their PSW training. The PSW works under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).
Job Duties: Assessment of clients including taking vital signs (if appropriately trained), height, weight, fluid intake and output
Observe and document any changes in a client’s physical or mental condition and report changes and concerns to the nurse and/or Manager
Provide essential daily care and emotional support to clients
Assist with meal preparation
Assist with medication reminders
Development of care plans in collaboration with the nurse
Provide client care including helping with providing personal hygiene
Provides for the safety and well being of the individual client
Assist with light housekeeping duties
Pick up medications at the pharmacy as needed
Assist the nursing staff as needed
Other relevant duties as assigned
Perform administrative duties in support of the organization’s goals and objectives Complete documentation within the electronic database in an accurate and timely manner per NTHC policy




Engage in career development to maintain current skills and knowledge regarding the scope of the position
Assist in the development and implementation of the organization’s quality improvement initiatives
Requirements: Mandatory
Completion of a Personal Support Worker Certificate
Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks required
Current CPR C and First Aid Certification
Valid Class G driver’s license and have access to a vehicle
Preferred
Experience working in First Nation communities, knowledge of traditions and customs
Experience working within an electronic medical record system
Knowledge
Knowledge of the First Nation communities of Manitoulin Island
Understanding and sensitivity for the Anishinaabe culture
Skills
Skilled in interpersonal relations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Ability
Ability to work autonomously
Ability to speak Anishinaabemowin is an asset
Work Conditions Frequent long-distance travel required
Services are delivered across Manitoulin Island and area to Anishinabek individuals
May require use of interpreters for clients where Ojibwe is their first language
