Additionally, the Town offers the following perquisites:What we promise?flexible work environment, including the ability to work a compressed work weekemployer paid health and dental benefit packagesfree gym membership at Town recreation centresReporting to the Chief Building Official, this position is responsible to exercise powers and perform duties regulated under the Building Code Act (BCA) for the administration and enforcement of the Building Code Act and Ontario Building Code in an independent manner. This includes inspecting construction, conducting maintenance inspections, issuing orders and performing supplementary plans examination when required. This individual will also be providing information to the general public regarding the building code, applicable laws, municipal by‑laws, and any other regulations pertaining to building, plumbing, building services, fire protection, site services, onsite sewage systems, etc. Performs work in a safe manner and within the regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.How you contribute to our Organization:Reviews and examines construction drawings, specifications and other supporting documentation for building classifications (Group “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, “E”, “F” & “G”) for buildings and structures within the scope of small and complex buildings as per Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing qualifications, to ensure compliance with the Building Code Act and Ontario Building Code, noting deficiencies and resolving deficiencies as required.Assumes increased risks with the review and inspection of life safety, fire safety, accessibility and structural analysis of large, complex and post disaster buildings.Performs on-site inspections pertaining to newly constructed buildings/structures, additions, alterations and change of use to ensure compliance with appropriate legislation and regulations by assessing the building, plumbing, building services, fire protection, site services, onsite sewage systems etc. by completing inspection report forms. Performs follow‑up inspections to ensure defects have been corrected.Perform plans examination pertaining to newly constructed buildings/structures, additions,
alterations and change of use to ensure compliance with appropriate legislation and regulations by reviewing the building, plumbing, building services, fire protection, site services, and onsite sewage systems when required.Reviews any work against the building by‑law, fees and charges by‑law and development charges for calculating and applying any applicable fees when necessary.Confers with residents, clients, architects, engineers, lawyers, trades and other external agencies or professional regarding building permit items and educates and assists on code related matters.Researches and responds to enquiries pertaining to building code matters and liaises with all Town departments, external agencies, builders, engineers, and architects regarding building code interpretations and enforcement.Provides mentorship and leadership to other staff members towards all aspects of permit applications, plans examination and inspections.Investigates non‑compliance issues and responds to emergency calls and ensures concerns/complaints are brought to the attention of the Deputy Chief Building Official and/or the Chief Building Official.An individual that finds a contravention of the Act or code may create an order and carry said order out immediately or within a specified time. This may also include serving, posting, and/or registering said order to the person contravening the Act or code.Attends court on behalf of the Town, including preparing detailed evidence reports.Provides customer service assistance at the front counter and assists other clerical staff with technical interpretations of building legislation.Performs other related duties as required.Works in compliance with the Code of Conduct, Corporate Health and Safety Policy, and all other corporate policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.What you bring to the team:Education and Training:Completion of a two‑year post‑secondary program in architectural, structural, or applied science technology program, or related field, or related equivalent combination of education and experience.Qualified in Large Buildings, Plumbing All Buildings, Building Services and Legal categories of the Ontario Building Code.Eligible for membership in the Ontario Building Officials Association as Building Code Qualified (BCQ)
and or Certified Building Code Official (CBCO).Valid class G driver’s license, and the ability to submit a clean driver’s abstract upon hire.PreferredThree‑year College Diploma in Architectural or Civil Engineering Program.Eligible for membership in the Ontario Building Officials Association as Building Code Qualified (BCQ) and or Certified Building Code Official (CBCO).Qualified in Complex Building, Building Structural, On‑Site Sewage Systems and Legal categories of the Ontario Building Code.Experience:3‑5 years’ work experience in plans examination, building inspections and/or other related experience in increasing complexity and responsibility.Knowledge/Skill/Ability:Knowledge of: The Building Code Act, Ontario Building Code, Building By‑law, Municipal Zoning By‑law, Development Charges Act, Planning Act, TARION Warranty Corp., Provincial Offences Act, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.Excellent inspection, analytical, problem‑solving, organization, and communication skills; ability to make independent decisions and judgement calls in the field.Requires excellent communication skills with all levels of staff and government, elected officials, consultants, builders, contractors, developers, architects, the general public and building industry organizations.Ability to handle dispute resolutions in a calm and confident mannerAbility to maintain discretion and confidentiality of information is criticalExperience in performing inspections related to agricultural, residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.The successful candidate must have the ability to align with established goals and objectives and is able to create/follow plans and processes accordingly to deliver task and goal completion to a high standard.
