Itinerant Special Education Support Worker (Clarington & CKL) St. Francis of Assisi CES, Newcastle (Home Base) 35 h/w (10 m/y)
Note: In cases where an internal applicant from a different classification applies, that candidate will be required to participate in an interview and will be subject to reference checks to determine eligibility for the position subject to Article 12.02 of the collective agreement. For greater clarity, the interview will be worth 70% and the reference check 30%.
Job Function To assist the teachers, school administration and School Resource Teams in the development, implementation and tracking of alternate programs which best meet students' social and emotional needs, through direct observation, coaching, mentoring and intensive and in-school support.
Job Description Assist in the development and implementation of preventative, research-based, effective strategies that address skill building and help students practice appropriate behaviours for a classroom/school setting.
Communicate the rationale for recommended strategies to the school team (administration, Special Education Support Staff, RECEs, classroom teachers, SERTs), and coach the team in the delivery and implementation of these strategies.
Provide and model direct in-class/school support to students demonstrating behavioural needs.
Assist in data collection by setting up tracking, observation, monitoring and charting of students’ behaviour for development of appropriate interventions to support the student.
Assist with behavioural assessments and writing safety plans.
Communicate with parents in collaboration with the school team, using appropriate tracking mechanisms.
Assist with outside agency transitions, where applicable.
Travel to schools to observe and discuss needs,
and to assist with the development of programmes to address student needs.
Ensure the alignment of programmes which are developed with PVNCCDSB policies, administrative procedures, and protocols, such as appropriate physical intervention with students and effective instructional practices.
Collaborate with the Special Education Department regularly to discuss implementation and success of programmes.
Provide professional development and Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training for staff in the system as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Requires OSSD plus a three year Child and Youth Care diploma, or equivalent. It is also preferred that the incumbent have additional specialised training related to behaviour management, ( i.e. Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Social Skills Training and Anger Management), and Intervener Levels 1 and 2 from Kinark or the Geneva Centre for Autism. Additional training/certification in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) would be beneficial.
A minimum of one year demonstrated knowledge and experience working with students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and a Behaviour Exceptionality.
Current certification in Behaviour Management Systems (BMS), First Aid and CPR.
Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and independently or cooperatively facilitate small and large groups of students.
Demonstrated skill using technology effectively for communication and for programming for students, such as a computer, Smart Board, iPad, etc.
Demonstrated effective communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as demonstrated ability to work effectively and cooperatively with students, school staff and central staff.
Demonstrated ability to maintain an workplace in which the confidentiality of the individual, class and school is highly valued and respected.
Ability to provide own transportation in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Requires a valid Driver's license and transportation to all areas of the Board's jurisdiction.
Ability to support students with appropriate lifts, transfers, and with outdoor yard supervision, to occur within the scope of supporting and modelling.
