The Gleaner - the Châteauguay Valley’s local newspaper since 1863
Full time (35 hours per week)
One-year term position, with potential for renewal
$26.00 / hour
Reports to: Associate Publisher
Location: remote, anywhere in Quebec
Eligibility: This position is funded through a Canadian federal government program that requires the successful candidate to be 35 years of age or younger and to reside in Quebec .
The role
The Gleaner is looking for a trained marketer to lead how we reach people and grow. If you have marketing education and you want a job where you build the whole plan yourself, see your ideas actually happen, and watch the results, this is a rare one. You would run marketing for the only newspaper reporting on the Châteauguay Valley - a 163-year-old institution - and report directly to the associate publisher.
About The Gleaner
The Gleaner has covered the Châteauguay Valley since 1863. The Valley extends south of Châteauguay to the U.S. border, and from Valleyfield to the Eastern Townships of Quebec. We are the only newspaper producing original local journalism in this vast region, and we publish complete sections in both English and French. We are a non-profit Registered Journalism Organization.
At a time when people no longer trust most of what they read online, a community newspaper like The Gleaner is the source they still believe - and our job now is to make sure more Valley residents know we’re here.
What this role is
You will design and run The Gleaner’s marketing: the plan that brings more Valley residents and partners to the paper, our website, our newsletter, and our podcast, encouraging readers to become subscribers and supporters. This is a marketing role, not a newsroom role. You promote the journalism; you don’t write it.
What you’ll do
Build a marketing and growth plan for The Gleaner and carry it out, working with the associate publisher.
Grow our email newsletter and website readership.
Run campaigns that encourage readers to subscribe and to support the paper.
Create content, including videos, for social media and other channels, and use short excerpts from our Farm to Food podcast to help promote it.
Reach people who don’t know us yet - including new residents, and French-speaking households who may not realize we publish a full section in French.
Help promote our community events, including a Trivia Pub Night and a community dance with a live band.
Keep track of what’s working, and adjust the plan based on real results.
Who we’re looking for
A diploma, certificate, or degree in marketing, digital marketing, communications, or a closely related field.
Real marketing knowledge — you will build a strategy, not just post on social media.
Skill and confidence with the current digital marketing tools and platforms.
Strong writing, and a good sense of what will interest readers.
Able to plan and manage your own work toward clear goals.
An asset
Experience with community media, journalism, or a non-profit.
French-English bilingualism - a good part of our potential growth is francophone.
Experience with email marketing, audience analytics, events,
or fundraising.
Comfortable making short-form video, such as YouTube Shorts, from clips and podcast excerpts.
Why you’ll want this job
It's the whole job, not a corner of one. You would own the marketing function end to end and shape it yourself — the kind of scope most marketers wait years to get.
Your work gets seen and used. You report to the associate publisher directly; positive ideas move fast, not up a chain.
Results you can point to. Growing readership and support for a well-known regional institution is exactly the kind of measurable, real-world result that builds a career.
Work from wherever you are in Quebec. This is a fully remote role - no need to relocate. We’re based in the Châteauguay Valley, south of Montreal, and candidates who already know this part of Quebec will have an edge.
Room to grow. This is a one-year term position with real potential to continue. If you grow our reach, we intend to find the means to keep you.
Work that matters. You'd be helping keep local journalism alive in a region that has no other source of it.
