Position: Vice President, Sales & Marketing

Reports to: President & CEO

Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. Our mission is to ignite wonder and empower dreams through science and nature and our purpose is Science for All.

Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion. Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province.

As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.

Position Description:

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Vice President actively contributes to the organization’s operational and long-term strategic goals, including the development of Science World’s Sales and Marketing strategy across all channels in support of the organization’s mission. This executive has a relentless focus on optimizing attendance, revenue and membership growth through strong targeted and monitored value propositions, proven experience in marketing and communications, a strong background in developing and implementing successful target segment marketing and leveraging data to achieve sales and marketing targets.

The Vice President, Sales & Marketing, reporting to the President & CEO, is responsible for diversifying and growing Science World’s earned revenue. They work collaboratively across the organization to develop products and positioning to maximize audience reach and conversion to generate earned and contributed (fundraising) revenue, drive attendance to Science World, increase engagement onsite, online and through programs, while raising brand and charitable awareness. A strong background in developing and optimizing revenue growth and leading marketing and communications is essential for this role.

The role provides leadership to the teams responsible for brand and marketing and all earned revenue, including admissions and memberships and all ancillary revenue such as retail, food and beverage, parking, facility rentals, events and commercial partnerships. A natural ability to lead, develop and inspire excellence in people is essential to success in this role.

Responsibilities:

Strategy, Vision, and Leadership

- Leads the development and implementation of the admissions, memberships, commercial sales and marketing strategies for Science World, ensuring they are aligned with Science World’s strategic plan Science for All to maximize engagement, achieve optimal performance, optimize earned revenue, increase brand awareness, and support the delivery of organizational and strategic goals




- Works with the Senior Leadership Team to develop Science World’s strategic goals and objectives, as well as the overall management of the organization
- Lead the development and execution of Science World’s market positioning and go-to-market strategies to drive earned revenue and, in close collaboration with the Chief People and Development Officer and Development team, accelerate philanthropic revenue generation
- Ensures that Science World is adhering to strategic and operational plans, delivering status reports to the SLT, Board and Board Committees on KPIs
- Builds strong relationships with the Board of Directors and Board Committees, including engaging and seeking approval for the annual earned revenue plan and operating budgets

Revenue Generation & Financial Management
- Responsible for diversifying and growing Science World’s earned revenue portfolio, ensuring consistent and profitable growth in sales revenues through pro-active planning, and target segment strategies
- Ensures optimization of earned revenue across the organization including attendance, membership, event and facility sales, retail, online and onsite sales and partnership opportunities
- Works with the Senior Director, Commercial Sales & Partnerships, Director, Brand & Marketing, and others as needed to develop specific sales and marketing plans to implement the strategies that drive attendance, membership, and revenue growth
- Works with the Chief People and Development Officer and Development team to support Science World’s Future is Nerdy fundraising campaign and appeals
- Works with the Vice President, Experience & Products to ensure the Science World experience continues to reflect the needs of visitors
- Leverages a well-honed data driven approach to continuous improvement, establishes KPIs to ensure revenue and margin growth in each program and product category and within targeted market segments
- Applies a thorough understanding of products, services, attendance & membership programs, facility & event sales, while proactively analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of sales strategies, methods, costs, and results
- Oversees the development and management of internal operating and marketing budgets
- Researches and develops strategies and tactics to identify new sales and marketing opportunities to optimize revenue and mission activities
- Maintains continuous lines of communication, keeping the President & CEO and the Senior Leadership Team informed of all critical issues

Marketing & Communications
- Acts as Science World’s overall communications lead, providing expertise and guidance on organizational communications planning, public relations, and crisis communications including acting as spokesperson as needed
- Oversees crafting of all messaging and positioning in the market; including ensuring competitive and market analysis are conducted as necessary to determine Science World’s key differentiators
- Provides strategic leadership and guidance to strengthen the brand’s unique and compelling image, personality, and voice to build relevance and equity among target visitor audiences and maintain and improve the reputation of the organization and its stakeholders
- Drives revenue and sales through creative marketing programs, and unique products and services through retail and online stores
- Ensures visitor experience and marketing programs are successful, metrics-driven, and goal-oriented

Team Leadership & Development
- Establishes short and long-term goals, objectives, policies, best practices,



and operating procedures for teams under their leadership that are aligned with the operating and strategic plans
- Promotes a data driven culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality
- Trains, develops, and manages the leadership of the Commercial Sales & Partnerships and Brand & Marketing teams including timely and appropriate training and development

Qualifications & Skills:

- Bachelor’s or equivalent professional qualification in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, or related field
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in senior sales and/or marketing leadership role/s. A background in both private enterprises and not-for-profits and experience marketing unique properties or cultural organizations would be an asset
- Proven success managing multi-million-dollar budgets and hitting aggressive, quantifiable targets across multiple distinct revenue streams
- Proven experience developing market positioning and go-to-market strategies to drive earned revenue and/or accelerate philanthropic revenue generation
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills including speaking to and working with media, responding to visitor feedback and crisis communications. Proven abilities to communicate effectively at all levels, both within the organization and with external stakeholders
- Strong revenue focus and analytical skills with clear understanding of what data is needed to develop, implement, and effectively monitor marketing, membership, attendance, and sales plans
- Confident, tactful, and highly collaborative when working with or presenting to senior leaders including Boards of Directors
- An approachable big picture, entrepreneurial thinker with strong business acumen and demonstrated ability in interpreting and translating a strategic vision into operational models and tactics
- A collaborative and motivating leadership style that builds trust while maintaining accountability. Ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers with a mindset focused on growing those around you
- Experience in retail merchandising and driving both store and online sales and leveraging unique exhibitions and opportunities to upsell members and visitors through our channels (preferred)
- Has an aptitude and passion for leading successful marketing organizations that drive the growth of revenue but are mission based and nimble
- Ability to work in a high change, fast-paced environment and effectively manage priorities
- Demonstrates a high level of professional and personal integrity
- Advanced level Excel skills and familiarity with industry standard accounting software
- Operate within the philosophy, culture, and values of Science World.
- Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role

The pay range for this position is $185,000 – $210,000 per year.
