PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The Lead Operations Reliability Manager leads the Locomotive Operations Support Coordinator team and oversees locomotive-related service interruptions across the CPKC network. This role ensures timely troubleshooting, routing, repair coordination, and resolution of bad order locomotives to support network fluidity, regulatory compliance, and locomotive availability. The Manager provides leadership, direction, and technical guidance to internal teams, field personnel, dispatching, locomotive and corridor managers, foreign carriers, and repair facilities. This position ensures consistent application of mechanical processes, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements, CPKC standards, and operational plans to minimize locomotive-related delays and improve service reliability.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES: Manage, coach, and support the Locomotive Operations Support Coordinator team in addressing locomotive-related service interruptions across the CPKC network
Oversee troubleshooting of mechanical issues with train crews, mechanical field personnel, and transportation teams through radio, phone, and system communications
Provide direction and escalation support for complex locomotive failures, bad order events, and line-of-road mechanical issues
Ensure timely and accurate communication of mechanical issues to field managers, dispatchers, locomotive managers, corridor managers, transportation teams, and train crews
Manage routing of bad order CPKC locomotives to appropriate repair facilities based on defect type, shop capability,
network conditions, and locomotive availability needs
Coordinate handling and return routing of bad order CPKC locomotives located on foreign carriers, working with foreign railroad mechanical and transportation teams.
Lead corrective action plans for locomotive-related service interruptions, reduce delays, and protect network fluidity
Ensure accurate updates to CPKC locomotive systems and programs, including Locomotive Mechanical Planning (LMP), SAP, and other applicable systems, while maintaining compliance with FRA rules, CPKC standards, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Review service interruption trends, repeat failures, bad actors, and recurring mechanical issues; develop KPIs and support continuous improvement initiatives to improve locomotive reliability, repair cycle times, and availability
Develop employee training plans, monitor coordinator performance, ensure completion of reports and shift turnovers, promote a safe and collaborative work environment, exemplify CPKC values, and provide on-call support for 24/7 operations
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in General Studies, Business, Mechanical Technology, Engineering, Transportation, or related field preferred
Minimum of 5 years of railroad mechanical, locomotive maintenance, transportation operations, or related heavy industry experience preferred
Prior leadership or supervisory experience
Robust understanding of locomotive defects, repair requirements, mechanical shop capabilities, and transportation network impacts
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships, collaborate effectively,
and influence stakeholders at all levels
Ability to work with LMP, SAP, Microsoft Office Suite, and other locomotive or transportation management systems preferred

MANAGEMENT CONDUCTOR PROGRAM Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC.
