Position Summary
The Quality and Service Specialist - Microbiology provides leadership for quality, service excellence, safety, and regulatory compliance programs within the Microbiology discipline. Working closely with laboratory leadership and quality partners, the role is responsible for developing and maintaining quality systems, supporting accreditation readiness,
leading staff competency and technical validation activities, monitoring service performance, and promoting continuous quality improvement. The incumbent also supports patient safety investigations, participates in operational on-call coverage, contributes to discipline-specific research and quality projects, and champions a culture of safety and excellence in laboratory practice.
Duties
Leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Microbiology Quality Plan.
Ensures compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and licensing requirements and laboratory best practices.
Leads staff competency programs and technical validation activities.
Monitors service quality, complaints, and feedback trends to support continuous improvement initiatives.
Leads laboratory safety initiatives, assessments, and compliance with workplace safety requirements.
Requirements
Minimum 5 years experience in Microbiology discipline
Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist program.
Proficiency with philosophy and practice of continuous quality improvement (CQI) and total quality management (TQM)techniques;
Computer proficiency with database management an asset.
Remain flexible to changing priorities and work volume.
CMLTO (College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario), required.
Demonstrated leadership and problem solving, required.
Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills demonstrating responsibility and leadership, required.
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, required.
Basic knowledge of statistical methods, required.
Computer skills and familiarity with software applications such as Word and Excel, required.
Excellent presentation skills, required.
Ability to be flexible, adaptable and perceptive, required.
Excellent organizational and time management skills, required.
Continuing education and skills acquisition by attending courses, seminars and conferences is required.
Membership and/or participation in professional clinical and quality associations is required.
