We are currently seeking an eager, self-starter looking to fill the permanent, full-time position of Controller, based in Calgary, Alberta.

Summary:

The Controller is a senior finance leader responsible for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all financial reporting and accounting operations for the parent company and its affiliate companies (in Canada and the US). The Controller owns the full-cycle accounting function, drives financial controls and compliance, and serves as a key business partner to senior leadership and operations.

This role carries direct accountability for the accounting team and plays a central role in shaping the financial processes, controls, and reporting infrastructure that support the organization’s growth and strategic objectives.

Reporting:

This position reports directly to the Director of Finance. This position will have the accounting team reporting to them and will collaborate with other departments as needed.

Job Duties:

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Financial Accounting & Reporting

- Own full-cycle accounting and all financial transactions, ensuring records are maintained in accordance with ASPE, AcSB standards, and GAAP.
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation and review of quarterly and annual financial reporting packages for senior leadership.
- Produce variance analysis reports with clear explanations of budget-versus-actual results, translating financial data into actionable insights for operations and management.
- Oversee cash flow monitoring, short-term forecasting, and liquidity management in coordination with the Director of Finance.
- Design, implement, and maintain financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards on a biweekly, monthly, and annual basis.

Intercompany & Multi-Entity Accounting

- Own intercompany reconciliations, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely resolution of discrepancies.
- Lead foreign exchange management related to US operations, including cross-border transactions, importing/exporting product valuations, and intercompany eliminations.
- Ensure all cross-border accounting entries comply with applicable Canadian and US standards and regulatory requirements.

Compliance & Statutory Requirements

- Ensure all statutory requirements are met, including GST/PST/CRA remittances and applicable federal, provincial, and state taxes across all Canadian and US jurisdictions where the company operates.
- Maintain and enforce internal controls to maximize protection of company assets, ensure policy compliance,



and safeguard financial workflows.
- Evaluate current processes and controls; lead the design and implementation of improvements that strengthen the organization’s financial position and risk profile.
- Maintain internal safeguards for revenue receipts, costs, organizational budgets, and actual expenditures.

Audit Leadership

- Lead internal and external audit processes, including audit planning, workflow management, deliverable preparation, and direct liaison with auditors.
- Ensure the organization maintains audit-ready documentation and financial records at all times.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting databases; develop and present recommendations for system improvements.

Banking, Credit, and Insurance

- Maintain and manage the company’s banking relationships, including monthly compliance reporting and leading the annual credit facility renewal process.
- Oversee credit approval processes for existing and prospective customers, establishing and maintaining appropriate credit policies.
- Oversee ongoing insurance requirements and lead the annual insurance review in collaboration with senior management.

Payroll Oversight

- Oversee payroll operations including processes, data integrity, reporting, compensation administration, and wage structure management across Canadian and US jurisdictions.
- Ensure compliance with payroll legislation and tax obligations in all provinces and states where the company employs staff.

Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

- Lead and develop a high-performing accounting team through effective management, clear direction, mentoring, coaching, and performance management.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with the Operations team, providing timely financial information and ensuring evolving operational requirements are integrated into accounting and finance processes.
- Act as a key business partner to senior leadership, contributing financial expertise to strategic planning, capital allocation decisions, and business initiatives.
- Champion adoption and optimization of the ERP system across the accounting function.

Knowledge, Skill & Technical Requirements:

- The requirements of this position include, but are not limited to:
- A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field is required. A master’s degree or MBA would be considered an asset.
- A professional accounting designation (e.g. CPA) is required.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience is required,



with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
- Experience in the oil and gas or pipeline/infrastructure sector is strongly preferred.
- Proven track record of owning financial planning, risk management, audit leadership, and cross-border compliance within a comparable organization.
- Demonstrated experience managing multi-entity or intercompany accounting structures.
- Experience leading and developing an accounting team.
- Thorough knowledge of ASPE, GAAP, and financial regulations applicable to Canada and the United States, with relevance to the oil and gas industry.
- Comprehensive knowledge of payroll legislation, tax compliance, third-party contracts, and insurance requirements across Canadian provinces and US states.
- Advanced competencies in financial reporting, audit management, internal controls, and design and presentation of management reporting.
- Experience with enterprise resource planning systems is an asset.
- Advanced Excel skills; proficiency with Microsoft 365, Adobe PDF, and cloud-based tools such as Dropbox.
- Strong experience with US operations, foreign exchange, cross-border transactions, and intercompany accounting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to influence and build effective relationships across all levels of the organization and with external parties.
- Self-directed and collaborative, with the drive and ownership mindset expected of a senior finance leader.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated leadership capability, including experience building, motivating, and developing high-performing teams.
- Sound judgment in financial risk assessment and decision-making, with a focus on protecting and strengthening the organization’s financial position.

Hours & Working Conditions:

Core hours for this position are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in an office environment. Hours may vary based on operational, reporting, and project demands.
