Overview
The Drilling Rig Supervisor II is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of drilling operations across multiple mining rigs at the Kearl site. This role provides frontline leadership to drilling crews, ensuring adherence to safety standards, production targets, and equipment performance expectations within an open-pit oil sands mining environment.
The Supervisor plays a critical role in aligning daily drilling activities with mine plans while driving continuous improvement in safety, productivity, and operational reliability. This position requires strong safety leadership, effective communication, decision-making under pressure, and the ability to lead teams in a dynamic operational setting. The expectation is to spend approximately 80% of the day in the field overseeing rig activities, ensuring safe and quality execution.
Responsibilities
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Adhere strictly to the KDP Operating Safety Plan (OSP), Interface Agreements (IA), and site SIMOPS requirements.
- Promote PSMS/SITM, participate in pre-task briefings, and ensure LSRA mitigations are in place and effective.
- Maintain active use of the KPA safety platform (checklists, safety observations,
incident reporting, V&V; submissions).
- Ensure compliance with O&G; AER regulations (e.g., Directive 36) and environmental requirements.
- Conduct daily structured safety observations and promote hazard identification and near-miss reporting.
- Ensure PPE compliance, safe work procedures, and adherence to permitting systems (e.g., working at heights, energy isolation).
- Oversee and participate in safety, operational, environmental, and ERP drills at required frequencies.
- Assume leadership during incidents as the senior on-site representative until additional support arrives.
Operational Execution & Field Leadership
- Spend the majority of time in the field monitoring rig operations and providing guidance.
- Supervise rig-up and rig-down activities and monitor contractor performance.
- Ensure proper execution of well control procedures and be present during well control events.
- Perform pre-mobilization rig inspections and track corrective actions to completion.
- Validate rig move routes, ensuring safety and suitability of locations.
- Visit and verify future drilling locations well in advance.
- Ensure alignment with drilling plans through daily coordination with Drilling Coordinators and Rig Managers.
- Monitor and report on operational performance, including NPT tracking in Wellsite Masters (WSM).
- Review and sign off on tour sheets and contractor-generated operational reports.
Coordination & Communication
- Interface with engineering and geology teams to understand well objectives and requirements.
- Communicate all unplanned events to Drilling Coordinators and ensure resolution (e.g., through After Action Reviews).
- Provide feedback on operational deficiencies and required actions.
- Maintain real-time engagement with Kearl Mapping (ArcGIS) and adherence to access readiness protocols.
- Coordinate with contractors to ensure adequate supply of materials (casing, fuel, additives, etc.).
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Identify opportunities to improve drilling efficiency and reduce costs.
- Promote new technologies, processes,
and best practices in drilling operations.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Site & Regulatory Adherence
- Ensure compliance with ground disturbance, overhead/underground utilities, and Off-MSL regulations.
- Respect land-use and environmental constraints (clearings, ROWs, wildlife surveys, berming, etc.).
- Follow all Kearl site and camp rules and expectations.
Qualifications
- 1st line well control required, 2nd line well control is an asset
- Strong safety leadership mindset with a focus on risk management.
- Proven ability to make decisions under pressure in energetic environments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Demonstrated leadership, team-building, and conflict-resolution abilities.
- Solid understanding of drilling operations, well control, and oil & gas regulations.
- Experience in operational planning and execution within mining or oil sands environments.
- Familiarity with safety and operational systems such as KPA, WSM, and ArcGIS is preferred.
