About Us
The CSSL is the authoritative source for Canadian severe convective storms data and research. Projects under the CSSL umbrella include the Northern Tornadoes Project, the Northern Hail Project and the new Northern Mesonet Project. We undertake the collection of data, documentation of events, and pursuit of research that enhances our understanding of severe convective storms and their impacts, and allows the development of innovative techniques and tools.
The CSSL develops climatologies of warm-season severe weather (tornadoes, downbursts / derechos, damaging hail, flash floods) that inform risk analysis and community resiliency, improving the safety and well-being of Canadians. We also make our data and analyses available to both decision makers and the public, and participate in various outreach activities, in order to increase awareness and spark innovation.
Responsibilities
The NHP Research Support will be responsible for carrying out research functions in collaboration with principal investigators, staff, and students.
This role will analyse hailstone aerodynamics through an embedded IMU and hailstone meltwater chemical analysis. It will also contribute to development of a continuous waveform radar for detecting hailstone fall speeds.
Qualifications
Education:
- Community College Diploma OR Undergraduate Degree in progress
Experience:
- 1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability to follow processes with high attention to detail
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to collect and analyze data in an objective manner
- Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
