Job Overview

As a Fiber Optic Technician with Summit Electric, you will support fiber optic installation, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and commissioning work on industrial projects throughout BC.

This role requires someone who understands the importance of clean workmanship, accurate testing, proper documentation, and safe work practices in active industrial environments.

Duties

- Installing, preparing, and handling fiber optic cable
- Stripping and preparing armoured and non-armoured fiber optic cables
- Fusion splicing single-mode and/or multimode fiber optic cable
- Completing patch panel terminations and splice tray work
- Working with FOSC closures, splice trays, patch panels, and fiber enclosures
- Performing fiber optic testing using EXFO or equivalent testing equipment
- Completing OTDR and OLTS testing as required
- Troubleshooting fiber optic links and identifying test failures or deficiencies
- Completing patch panel corrections and minor repair work
- Reading and following fiber schedules, drawings, labeling information, and test requirements
- Maintaining accurate test records, reports, photos, and field documentation
- Communicating clearly with supervisors, project teams, and client representatives
- Working safely and efficiently in industrial field environments

Required Experience

A minimum of 1 year of fiber optic field experience is required. Additional industrial, electrical, instrumentation, or communications experience is considered a strong asset.

- Proven experience with industrial, commercial, utility,



or communications-based fiber optic systems
- Strong electrical experience with knowledge of low voltage wiring and electrical safety procedures
- Fiber optic installation, testing, and troubleshooting
- Fusion splicing
- EXFO testing equipment or similar OTDR / OLTS platforms
- FOSC closure preparation and splice tray management
- Field documentation and organized reporting

Other Requirements

- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
- Ability to travel and work at various project locations
- Ability to work 10–12 hour shifts when required
- Strong commitment to protected work practices and site procedures

Preferred Certifications

The following certifications are preferred, but training may be provided for the right applicant:

- WHMIS 2015
- CSTS
- First Aid Level 1
- H2S Alive
- Fall Protection
- Electrical apprenticeship or Red Seal certification
- Additional fiber optic training or manufacturer-specific certifications

This role requires someone who can work independently when needed, communicate clearly with the team, and maintain a high standard of workmanship while meeting project timelines.

Pay: $32.82-$46.88 per hour
