Position Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Mental Health provides comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients experiencing a range of mental health and related conditions. The NP delivers evidence-based, patient-centered care primarily through virtual/telehealth services and works collaboratively with physicians, mental health professionals, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers to support positive patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis• Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments for adolescents and adults through virtual care.

- Obtain detailed medical, psychiatric, developmental, social, and family histories.
- Assess and screen for a broad range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, ADHD, and other common mental health concerns.
- Review screening tools, questionnaires, previous assessments, and supporting documentation.
- Identify and differentiate mental health conditions from medical, neurological, substance-related, or other contributing factors.
- Develop and document diagnostic impressions, clinical assessments, and treatment recommendations.
- Identify patients requiring escalation of care or referral to specialized mental health services.

Treatment & Medication Management• Develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with patients.

- Initiate, prescribe, adjust, and monitor medications in accordance with clinical guidelines, applicable regulations, and provincial scope of practice.
- Monitor treatment effectiveness, medication adherence, side effects, and patient outcomes.
- Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests and investigations when clinically indicated.
- Provide non-pharmacological treatment recommendations and evidence-based strategies to support mental wellness.
- Monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans based on clinical response and changing needs.




- Provide ongoing follow-up and management through virtual/telehealth appointments.

Patient Education & Support• Educate patients and families about mental health conditions, treatment options, medications, and available supports.

- Provide guidance on coping strategies, behavioral approaches, lifestyle factors, and self-management.
- Support patients in understanding their treatment plans and making informed decisions about their care.
- Provide ongoing coaching and support to promote treatment adherence and improve patient outcomes.
- Build solid therapeutic relationships and patient trust within a virtual care environment.
- Address patient questions, concerns, and barriers to care in a timely and professional manner.

Collaboration & Care Coordination• Collaborate with physicians, psychologists, therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.

- Coordinate referrals to specialists, community resources, and other appropriate services.
- Facilitate continuity of care between primary care, mental health, and other healthcare providers.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions, clinical consultations, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Support appropriate escalation of patients whose clinical needs exceed the scope of virtual or primary mental health care.

Documentation & Compliance• Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).

- Ensure compliance with provincial nursing standards, regulatory requirements, privacy legislation, and organizational policies.
- Maintain appropriate documentation related to assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, prescriptions, referrals, and follow-up care.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality assurance activities, and continuous professional development.
- Stay current with evolving mental health guidelines, evidence-based practices, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

- Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner in good standing with the applicable provincial nursing regulatory body.
- Authorized to practice as an NP in Alberta, Ontario, and/or British Columbia, depending on assigned patient population and service requirements.
- Authorized to assess, diagnose, prescribe, and manage patients within applicable provincial scope of practice.
- Minimum 2–3 years of Nurse Practitioner experience preferred.
- Previous experience providing telehealth or virtual healthcare services strongly preferred.
- Experience in mental health, psychiatry, primary care, or community health strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of evidence-based approaches to the assessment and treatment of common mental health conditions.




- Experience with psychotropic medication management is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct clinical assessments, establish rapport, provide treatment, and deliver follow-up care through virtual care platforms.
- Comfortable using EMRs, telehealth platforms, and digital healthcare tools to support patient care and clinical documentation.

- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment-planning skills.
- Strong understanding of mental health assessment and evidence-based treatment approaches.
- Excellent communication, active listening, and patient engagement skills.
- Strong virtual communication and telehealth skills, with the ability to build patient rapport remotely.
- Ability to establish trust and rapport with patients in a virtual care environment.
- Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to manage a high-volume caseload while maintaining clinical quality and patient safety.
- Ability to recognize clinical risk and determine when escalation or referral is required.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMRs), telehealth platforms, and virtual care technologies.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary care team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Experience:

- Previous experience delivering mental health services through telehealth or virtual care.
- Assessment and treatment of a broad range of mental health conditions across adolescents and adults.
- Experience with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, ADHD, and other common mental health concerns.
- Mental health risk and safety screening.
- Psychotropic medication initiation and management.
- Experience conducting virtual assessments, consultations, medication follow-ups, and patient education.
- Experience working in a high-volume clinical environment.
