The Opportunity:
We are looking for a Dispatch & Route Planner to join our team. The mission of the role is to coordinate daily service operations by effectively scheduling, routing, and assigning work, supporting drivers, and responding to changing needs to ensure routes are completed efficiently and customers receive reliable service.
This position reports to the Dispatch Supervisor. We have a structured training program that includes ridealongs with drivers. This role also has opportunity for advancement.
We are located in Headingley, Manitoba. There is no bus service, so you must have reliable transportation to and from work.
Compensation: $21-25 per hour starting wage, depending on qualifications and experience.
What you’ll be doing:
- Monitoring trucks on routes using GPS to ensure services are delivered to customers
- Monitoring the 2-way radio, phone and computer messaging to respond to driver and customer concerns, as well as questions from other departments in the company
- Reviewing the week’s routes to ensure drivers are following an efficient path (instead of criss-crossing across the city!)
- Using your best judgement to make decisions about service delivery options for driver situations
- Determining capacity of operations for Sales requests
- Throwing out the plans and directing drivers by the seat of your pants when chaos hits
- Most of the day you will work with another dispatcher in addition to the multiple people in and out of the dispatch office. There will be a couple hours at the end of the day where you are by yourself once the most active part of the day has died down.
- Route planning for the following days and week
- Providing help to other members of the team when asked and performing other duties as assigned
The skills you bring:
- Advanced computer navigation skills, ability to learn current systems
- Ability and drive to pick up the phone and call customers and drivers in order to solve problems
- Ability to work with Team Members to solve problems
- ‘Straight shooter’ communication style
- Highly organized! That is, you love spreadsheets, documentation and colour-coded sticky notes.
- Prioritization - the ability to manage multiple demands at once
- Problem-solving and decision-making - with the ability to quickly adjust routes and plans as operational needs change
- Operational planning and coordination - the ability to organize people, vehicles, jobs, timing, route, priorities, and constraints so the day’s work is executed efficiently
- Reliability and follow-through on commitments,
ensuring work and operational issues are followed through to completion
- Dispatch experience an asset, but not required. It’s trainable!
