Position Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Payments to join a newly forming Payments Engineering team and take meaningful ownership of Kindsight's next-generation Payments Platform.
This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role on a small team building a new Payments service that will support Kindsight's fundraising products, including Ascend, AdvRM, and Connect.
You will work closely with our Staff Engineer and Director of Engineering to design and deliver major features and capabilities within the platform. While the Staff Engineer will help shape the overall system architecture and technical direction, you will be expected to independently take a Payments problem or capability, design the solution, own the implementation, and see it through to production.
This is a strong opportunity for an engineer who has already owned production Payments or billing systems and wants broader technical responsibility in a greenfield environment. You'll help establish the patterns for reliability, reconciliation, integration, transaction processing, and operational support that the platform will use as it grows.
The work will initially be heavily backend-focused as the team builds the new service and integrates with Kindsight's selected Payments partner. Our backend technology is still being finalized, with Ruby currently under strong consideration. Prior Ruby, Salesforce, Apex, or LWC experience is not required.
What matters most is deep backend engineering ability, genuine production Payments experience, solid technical judgment, and the ability to independently design and own solutions.
The original Senior profile calls for end-to-end ownership of payment features, reconciliation, reliability, security, incident response, and multi-codebase work; those remain core expectations for this role.
What You’ll Do:
- Help build Kindsight's new Payments service and the infrastructure supporting our next-generation Payments Platform.
- Independently own the design and end-to-end delivery of significant Payments features and capabilities.
- Build and evolve integrations with payment gateways,
processors, and Kindsight's selected Payments partner.
- Design reliable transaction-processing flows for systems responsible for moving and tracking real donor funds.
Work deeply with payment authorization, tokenization, webhooks, retries, replays, idempotency, transaction state, recurring payments, and reconciliation
- Design solutions that ensure payments are not silently lost, duplicated, incorrectly routed, or processed for the wrong amount.
- Help establish patterns for reconciliation between payment providers and Kindsight's systems of record.
- Debug and lead resolution of production Payments incidents involving failed transactions, duplicate payments, missed webhooks, recurring-payment failures, provider changes, and integration issues.
- Identify and improve reliability, security, and maintainability gaps as the platform evolves.
- Own individual technical capabilities while considering how they affect the broader Payments ecosystem and surrounding Kindsight products.
- Contribute to platform architecture and system-design discussions alongside the Staff Engineer and Director of Engineering.
- Review pull requests and technical designs and provide thoughtful feedback to engineers across the team.
- Mentor Intermediate engineers and help them grow from implementing established designs toward greater technical ownership.
- Participate in approximately two-week sprint cycles and own meaningful deliverables through design, implementation, testing, release, and follow-up.
- Collaborate closely with Product and, as the organization develops, QA, Support, Compliance, Security, and Payments Operations.
- Help establish engineering practices where reliability, financial correctness, testing, and operational readiness are fundamental requirements.
- Learn the fundraising domain and design for the complex legal, financial, and reporting structures of universities, healthcare foundations, nonprofits, and other Kindsight customers.
What We’re Looking For:
- 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience, including meaningful time owning a production Payments or billing system.
- Direct, hands-on experience building server-side integrations with payment gateways, processors, billing platforms, or Payments infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of payment concepts including webhooks, tokenization, retries, idempotency, recurring billing, transaction lifecycle, and reconciliation.
- Strong backend engineering fundamentals in Ruby, Go, Java, C#, Python, Node.js, or another modern backend language.
- Experience independently designing technical solutions rather than relying on architecture decisions being made for you.
- Experience owning significant features or capabilities from initial design through production.
- Experience designing or implementing reconciliation patterns for financial data.
- Ability to answer the question: How do we know money didn't get silently lost between the payment provider and our system of record?
- Working knowledge of PCI-DSS scope-reduction concepts such as hosted fields, tokenization, credential handling, and the security implications of Payments architecture.
- Experience diagnosing production issues where financial correctness or customer funds were at risk.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain architecture decisions and technical tradeoffs.
- Ability to provide useful code and design feedback to other engineers.
The current Senior profile specifically calls for reconciliation ownership, PCI knowledge, multi-service or multi-codebase leadership, and the ability to defend technical decisions rather than simply implement them.
Nice To Haves:
- Experience with more than one payment gateway or processor.
- Experience with recurring payments, subscription billing, dunning, card-expiration flows, and failed-payment recovery.
- Experience with refunds, chargebacks, transaction disputes, or payment operations.
- Experience consolidating duplicated payment integrations, webhook handlers, or transaction-processing patterns.
Compensation Range: $120,000 -$150,000 CAD OTE annually, based on experience, market benchmarks and role complexity. We aim to offer fair, competitive pay that reflects your skills and the market.
