An opportunity to build your bookkeeping career while learning a specialized area of accounting.
We are a full-service law firm located in the heart of downtown Victoria, with roots dating back to 1881. We are looking for a Bookkeeping Assistant to join our team in a full-time, entry-level position.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has completed bookkeeping or accounting courses, is a recent graduate, or has some previous bookkeeping experience and is looking to build a career and broaden their skills.
Why this role?
You’ll receive hands-on training and dedicated mentorship while gaining practical experience in a professional accounting environment. In addition to developing your general bookkeeping skills, you'll have the opportunity to learn about law firm accounting and trust accounting: a specialized area of accounting that offers valuable experience for someone looking to grow their career.
You don't need to know law firm accounting coming into the role. We can teach you. What we're looking for is someone who is curious, dependable, detail-oriented, and genuinely interested in learning.
What you'll be doing
The position offers a broad range of bookkeeping and administrative responsibilities, including:
- Processing accounts receivable and accounts payable
- Managing and recording client disbursements
- Posting client bills and related accounting entries
- Processing accounting adjustments
- Assisting with client account and trust accounting processes
- Working with lawyers, legal assistants, administration, and other members of the firm on accounting-related matters
- Assisting with daily accounting and administrative processes
- Providing reception support and covering reception during breaks, vacations, and other absences
- Learning and following established accounting procedures and internal controls
- Assisting with other bookkeeping and administrative duties as required
Because this is a varied role, you'll have the opportunity to learn how the accounting function of a busy professional services firm operates from the ground up.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone who is:
- A graduate of, or currently has completed coursework in, bookkeeping, accounting, or a related program; or has previous bookkeeping experience
- Comfortable working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy
- Organized and able to manage competing priorities
- A strong written and verbal communicator
- Comfortable working independently while also being a collaborative member of a team
- Willing to learn new software, procedures, and processes
- Able to follow established procedures and appreciate the importance of consistency and accuracy
- Professional, dependable, and willing to ask questions when something isn't clear
A great opportunity to learn
One of the key benefits of this position is the opportunity to work closely with an experienced bookkeeper who will provide dedicated training and mentorship.
You'll learn not only the fundamentals of day-to-day bookkeeping, but also:
- How accounting works within a law firm
- The fundamentals of law firm trust accounting
- How client funds and disbursements are handled
- The importance of documentation, accuracy, and internal controls
- How bookkeeping interacts with lawyers, legal assistants, and firm administration
- Professional accounting processes and procedures
This is an ideal opportunity for someone at the beginning of their bookkeeping career who wants to learn, gain meaningful experience, and grow their skills in a supportive environment.
