Job Description

Registered Social Worker - Support Services

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer and/or designate

Professional Designation: Registered Social Worker

Term: Two Year Contract with Possibility of Renewal (Full-time, Hybrid)

Job Purpose and Overview

The Social Worker – Support Services provides direct support to individuals living with brain injury, their families, caregivers, and professionals across Ontario. The position combines clinical group facilitation, individual support, system navigation, advocacy, education, and community outreach to ensure individuals have access to information, services, and supports throughout their recovery journey.

Working as part of OBIA's Support Services team, this role facilitates evidence-informed online concussion and caregiver support groups, responds to calls and inquiries, including the 1-800 Helpline, provides short-term individual advocacy and system navigation, delivers educational presentations, and contributes to the development of resources that improve the lives of people living with brain injury and their families.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Online Support Group Coordination and Facilitation

- Coordinate and schedule OBIA’s online eight-week support groups, including participant screening, registration, intake, and follow-up.
- Facilitate evidence-informed groups using best practices to create a safe, respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages participation, connection, and meaningful group discussion.
- Develop, update, and deliver evidence-based educational materials on brain injury, concussion, symptoms, and coping strategies, adapting content to each group's needs.
- Monitor participants' well-being, identify individuals who require additional support or advocacy, and provide appropriate referrals to OBIA staff, community associations, and other relevant resources.
- Develop and administer pre- and post-group evaluations in accordance with best practices and funding requirements, and synthesize evaluation results.
- Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation, including weekly clinical notes, participant outcomes,



and program reporting, and prepare a final report after each eight-week session.
- Work with marketing staff to promote the support groups and increase engagement.

2. Individual Support and Helpline

- Respond to calls and inquiries, including on OBIA’s 1-800 Helpline, providing emotional support, education, information, and resources related to brain injury.
- Complete client intake and needs assessments, provide system navigation, and connect individuals with appropriate health care, rehabilitation, income, housing, legal, education, employment, and community services.
- Provide short-term individual advocacy and support clients in navigating complex systems, communicating with service providers, understanding their options and rights, and developing self-advocacy skills.
- Liaise with service providers, community organizations, rehabilitation programs, hospitals, insurers, government services, and affiliated community brain injury associations to coordinate supports.
- Maintain accurate client records and documentation and conduct follow-up as appropriate.
- Identify systemic barriers and emerging needs affecting individuals with brain injury and communicate trends and concerns to OBIA leadership.
- Collaborate across OBIA departments and participate in case consultation as appropriate.

3. Education, Outreach, and Program Development

- Deliver presentations, workshops, and educational sessions to community organizations, health professionals, students, caregivers, employers, and other stakeholders.
- Represent OBIA at conferences, community events, information fairs, and networking opportunities to promote awareness of brain injury, available supports, and OBIA programs and services.
- Support awareness campaigns and develop educational resources, presentations, and initiatives.
- Contribute to developing and improving programs and services based on participant feedback, emerging needs, and best practices.
- Support program evaluation, outcome measurement, and funding reports, and recommend improvements to enhance program effectiveness and participant experience.

4. Other

- Support organizational projects and initiatives during periods when support groups are not in session.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with community partners and stakeholders.




- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and other learning opportunities.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the CEO and/or designate.

Qualifications

- Registered Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) (Master's preferred)
- Experience facilitating evidence-informed psychoeducational, therapeutic, or peer support groups.
- Experience providing individual advocacy, system navigation, and support to individuals with complex needs.
- Knowledge of acquired brain injury/concussion and its effects on individuals, families, and service systems (asset).
- Knowledge and experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma (asset).
- Solid listening, observation, communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills, with demonstrated warmth, empathy, and self-awareness.
- Ability to create and maintain safe, inclusive, and respectful group environments where participants’ thoughts and feelings are valued and diverse perspectives are treated with fairness and respect.
- Ability to effectively guide, redirect, and manage group discussions, including strong mediation, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Experience developing and delivering presentations, workshops, and educational sessions.
- Knowledge of community resources, funding agencies, treatment centres, social service networks, and other relevant organizations.
