Transportation Safety Coordinator
The Company
BDS is a leading heavy haul and specialized transportation company based in Acheson, Alberta, providing transportation solutions across Western Canada and the United States. Our fleet supports a wide range of industries including oil and gas, construction, energy, and infrastructure.
With a strong focus on safety, reliability, and operational efficiency, BDS operates a diverse fleet including lowbeds, RGN trailers, bed trucks, winch trucks, and specialized heavy haul configurations.
We are looking for an experienced Transportation Safety Coordinator to join our team and take an active role in managing and improving BDS's safety programs.
The Position
The Transportation Safety Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day management and development of BDS's safety programs and safety processes.
This is a hands-on position working closely with drivers, operations, maintenance, and management. The successful candidate will help ensure our employees understand and follow company safety expectations, maintain our safety standing with clients and industry organizations, and continuously improve our safety programs.
This position is well suited for someone who understands the transportation industry, is organized and self-sufficient, and is comfortable working directly with employees and management to address safety concerns and improve performance.
Our transportation permitting and regulatory compliance functions are managed separately within the company. This position will focus primarily on safety, employee onboarding, incident management, client safety requirements, safety systems, and continuous improvement.
Key ResponsibilitiesSafety Program Management
- Manage and maintain BDS's company safety programs, policies, and procedures.
- Review and update safety policies and procedures as required.
- Develop and maintain safety forms, inspections, checklists, toolbox talks, and other safety documentation.
- Identify gaps in existing safety processes and develop practical solutions.
- Maintain accurate safety records and documentation.
- Assist with preparing for COR, client, and other external safety audits.
- Track safety performance and identify trends requiring attention.
- Work with management to develop corrective actions and safety improvements.
Driver & Employee Safety
- Support the onboarding and safety orientation of all new employees.
- Ensure new employees complete required safety training, documentation, and orientations before beginning work.
- Maintain employee safety files and training records.
- Conduct and coordinate toolbox meetings and safety training.
- Communicate safety expectations and company policies to employees.
- Monitor driver safety performance and identify trends or recurring issues.
- Work directly with drivers to address unsafe practices and safety concerns.
- Promote a solid safety culture throughout the company.
Incident Investigation
- Lead and assist with investigations involving vehicle incidents, property damage, injuries, near misses, and other safety events.
- Gather information, interview employees and witnesses, and document findings.
- Identify root causes and contributing factors.
- Develop and track corrective actions.
- Follow up with employees and management to ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Maintain accurate incident records and reporting.
- Monitor incident trends and recommend preventative measures.
Client & Industry Safety Systems
- Manage BDS's safety profiles and requirements within client and industry safety platforms.
- Maintain and update ISNetworld, ComplyWorks, and other client safety portals.
- Ensure required documentation, certificates, policies, statistics, and safety records remain current.
- Monitor client safety requirements and deadlines.
- Complete safety questionnaires, submissions, and prequalification requirements.
- Work with clients to resolve safety documentation issues and maintain approved status.
- Maintain BDS's safety standing with current and prospective clients.
U.S. Operations
- Maintain BDS's U.S. safety and operating compliance requirements.
- Monitor and maintain the company's U.S. safety profiles and required registrations.
- Coordinate required U.S. safety documentation and reporting.
- Assist with maintaining BDS's U.S. operating authority and safety standing.
- Work with management and external providers as required to address U.S. safety requirements.
Safety Systems & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain and develop safety processes within SiteDocs and other company systems.
- Build new forms and workflows as operational needs change.
- Review existing forms and processes to ensure they remain practical and effective.
- Assist with implementing new safety initiatives and company policies.
- Work with operations and maintenance to improve safety processes.
- Monitor safety metrics and prepare reports for management.
- Identify opportunities to reduce incidents, damage, injuries, and unsafe behaviour.

Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in transportation safety, occupational safety, or a related field.
- Experience in the trucking, heavy haul, oil and gas, construction, or industrial sector is strongly preferred.
- Experience with safety program development and administration.
- Experience conducting incident investigations.
- Experience with employee onboarding and safety orientations.
- Experience with ISNetworld, ComplyWorks, or similar client safety management systems.
- Experience with SiteDocs or similar safety management software is an asset.
- Experience with U.S. transportation safety requirements is an asset.
- Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver's licence.
