The base salary will be $63,730 - $90,820 per annum. Starting salary will be aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and demonstrated qualifications.
Please note, this is a 1-year temporary full-time contract opportunity that is wholly grant funded.

The mandate of the Student Experience portfolio is to encourage student engagement, support student success, and to enhance overall student life at Western. Student Experience encompasses Indigenous Services, Entrepreneurship Centre (Propel), Sports and Recreation, Student Development Centre, Student Success Centre, and the Wellness Education Centre, which operate together to create an environment in which students can thrive and succeed. Student Experience also collaborates closely with the University Students’ Council, Society of Graduate Students, and other departments across campus.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Coach, Strength & Conditioning reports to the Director, Sport and works collaboratively with varsity coaches, athletic therapists, sport medicine professionals, and Sports & Recreation staff to deliver high-quality, evidence-informed strength and conditioning services that support the health, well-being, and competitive success of Western's varsity student-athletes.
The role is responsible to support the design, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive strength and conditioning programs that enhance athletic performance, reduce the risk of injury, and promote long-term athlete development across multiple varsity sport programs. The Assistant Coach contributes to an integrated high-performance sport environment by providing individualized athlete support, monitoring performance, assisting with return-to-play programming,
educating student-athletes on safe and effective training practices, and ensuring the safe operation of strength and conditioning facilities. Through collaboration, innovation, and evidence-based practice, the role supports Western's commitment to delivering an exceptional student-athlete experience and fostering excellence in varsity athletics.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree in Kinesiology, Sport Management, Athletics, Recreation or related field
- Certification in Strength & Conditioning (NSCA CSCS) or equivalent
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Master’s Degree Sport Science or Sport Performance Discipline preferred
Experience:
- 1-3 years’ experience as a strength & conditioning coach
- Strong technical background and practical experience in highly competitive environments
- Experience in Sports & Recreation fields, that include athletic therapy, strength and conditioning, fitness and wellness, administration, risk management, etc.
- Experience as an athlete and/or coach in a high-performance setting at the national, provincial and/or university setting preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge in the areas of sport performance, strength and conditioning, and sport science
- Understanding of testing procedures and ability to develop and manage the collection of high-performance data and collate to show specific outcomes and metrics
- Knowledge and understanding of strength and conditioning equipment and maintenance of high-performance facilities
- Working knowledge of other domains of sport performance training, such as: athletic therapy, mental performance, nutrition, and sport medicine
- Proven ability to work with student-athletes, high-performance teams and the ability to work with coaches to design, implement, evaluate, and assess sport performance programs for a variety of sports
- Strong problem-solving skills,
including the ability to change priorities and outcomes as needed under constraints
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate, facilitate and communicate with various multiple levels of stakeholders
- Knowledge of USport and OUA Rules and Regulations
- Demonstrated understanding of EDI practices
- Strong background and expertise in athletics & recreation
- Exceptional organizational and coordinating skills, including managing multiple competing priorities and an ability to adapt quickly to emerging priorities
- Possesses high levels of integrity with a track record as a proven role model with peers, athletes and coaches
- Ability to provide guidance, support and feedback in a way that is positively received
- A continuous quality improvement approach to evaluation and program development
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with various groups of people
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop shared vision to lead student athletes and support staff to excellence
- Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
- Intermediate computer skills; skills with Synergy software an asset
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team
