The Director of Care will provide clinical leadership to the nursing and care team, ensuring residents receive safe, individualized, dignified and person-centred care. This position will oversee care planning, staff performance, resident assessments, medication management, documentation, family communication and clinical quality initiatives.

The successful candidate will be a strong people leader who combines sound clinical judgment with excellent communication, organization and relationship-building skills.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide overall leadership and direction to the residence's nursing and personal care services.
- Oversee the delivery of safe, compassionate and resident-centred care.
- Conduct and/or oversee resident assessments and ensure individualized care plans are developed, implemented and regularly reviewed.
- Monitor changes in residents' health status and coordinate appropriate interventions and follow-up.
- Supervise, coach and support nursing and personal care staff, including RNs, RPNs and PSWs.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, orientation, training, performance management and scheduling of care staff.
- Ensure medication administration, documentation and clinical practices are completed in accordance with professional standards and residence policies.
- Work collaboratively with physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacies, hospitals, home care providers and other external healthcare professionals.
- Communicate effectively with residents and their families regarding care needs, changes in condition and ongoing care plans.
- Respond appropriately to resident incidents, emergencies, falls, changes in condition and other clinical concerns.
- Promote a culture of dignity, respect, independence and quality of life for all residents.
- Monitor infection prevention and control practices and ensure appropriate protocols are followed.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation and resident records.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, professional standards and organizational policies.




- Support preparation for inspections, audits and regulatory reviews.
- Monitor quality indicators and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Address resident and family concerns professionally and promptly.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care conferences and resident/family meetings.
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels and support effective utilization of care resources.
- Develop and deliver ongoing education and training for care staff.
- Promote a positive, collaborative and accountable workplace culture.
- Participate in the residence's emergency preparedness and response programs.
- Provide clinical leadership and support to the residence's overall operations as required.

Qualifications

- Current registration in valuable standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as an RN or RPN.
- Diploma or degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 3–5 years of nursing experience, preferably within retirement living, long-term care, community care, geriatrics or a similar senior-care environment.
- Previous supervisory, management or clinical leadership experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with seniors and individuals with complex care needs.
- Strong knowledge of medication management, falls prevention, dementia care, infection prevention and clinical documentation.
- Knowledge of Ontario retirement-home legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.

- Excellent communication, interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities.




- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with residents, families, staff and healthcare professionals.
- Must be willing to obtain a yearly Covid 19 & Flu Vaccine.

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous Director of Care, Assistant Director of Care, Clinical Manager, Nursing Manager or similar leadership experience.
- Experience in a retirement residence or seniors' living environment.
- Additional education in gerontology, leadership, healthcare administration or a related field.
- Experience with dementia care and responsive behaviors.
- Familiarity with electronic medication administration records and electronic resident documentation systems.
