Our client in Elmira is searching for a The Senior Rater who is primarily responsible for researching and completing documentation for the customs broker and arranging freight for truck, marine and air export and import shipments. This position may also be responsible for conducting audits for quality control and duty drawback filings.

Temp-to-perm position

Full time Monday - Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm

Wage negotiable based on experience

Key Responsibilities

1. Determine correct tariff classification, tariff treatment, country of origin and USMCA qualification for inventory items. Maintain and adjust databases as required.

2. Contact suppliers to obtain proper tariff classification, material certificates and certificates origin.

3. Obtain quotes for shipping (both import and export) and arrange shipping for truck, air or marine cargo.

4. Communicate with government agencies, brokers to keep abreast of customs requirement changes occurring regularly. (ie: EPA, automotive declarations) and ensure compliance.

- As a senior team member, the individual will track and follow up on entries and provide reports to members of the team





6. Investigate and determine duty drawbacks where applicable

- Communicate with government agencies to ensure compliance and advise client on regulations
- A variety of other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience

- Secondary school education or equivalent experience
- Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) in good standing
- Minimum of five years general customs brokerage experience customs with at least three years of comprehensive rating experience
- Note: Consideration will be given to holders of appropriate diplomas or qualifications from other institutions or organizations (e.g. Sir Sandford Fleming or Seneca Colleges, Canada Customs Qualified, etc.)

Competencies, Working Skills & Attributes

- Strong knowledge of Customs Tariff, Explanatory Notes, General Rules of Interpretation, regulations, release initiatives, ACROSS systems and ocean release processes
- Excellent attention to detail; able to make recommendations
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal in order to communicate clearly and concisely with coworkers, other departments and clients
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Tactful and dependable
