Heavy Equipment Technician positions available in Fort McMurray, Alberta (field) and Strathmore, Alberta (shop). This role involves maintaining and repairing a mixed fleet of heavy trucks, light-duty vehicles, and drilling equipment. Work includes both shop-based maintenance during summer months and field service work from mobile units during winter seasons on a rotating schedule (2-on-1-off or 3-on-1-off). The work environment is rapid-paced, family-oriented, and values work-life balance with condensed summer schedules and comprehensive support.
Requirements
Must-haves:
Class 5 driver's license with insurable driving abstract
Ability to pass zero-tolerance pre-employment drug and alcohol testing (including marijuana)
Preventative maintenance knowledge
Hydraulic diagnostics experience (beyond basic hose replacement)
Nice-to-haves:
Red Seal journeyman heavy duty off-road mechanic license (preferred) or apprenticeship in heavy duty mechanics
Class 3 driver's license
CVIP (Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program) license
H2S, first aid, or fall protection certifications
Ability to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics
Experience with Ingersoll Ram drilling equipment
Compensation & Benefits
Shop Rate:
$45$48/hour (base $45/hour +$3/hour with CVIP certification)
Field Rate: $64.50$68/hour (starting $64.50/hour seniors up to $68/hour)
Overtime: Time-and-a-half after 44 hours/week (winter field work only)
Seasonal Bonus: Up to $60/day based on performance and company financials (80100+ field days = $4,000$5,000+ potential annually)
Medical & Dental: 80% coverage (Sun Life) after 3-month probation company-subsidized with employee deduction
Vacation: 2 weeks (summer) Christmas shutdown December 1926
Other: $60/month phone allowance (or company phone provided) discounted winter gear and boots via payroll deduction
Hours
Summer (MaySeptember): 7am5:30pm, MondayThursday (condensed 4-day week)
Winter (OctoberApril, Shop): 7am5:30pm, MondayFriday
Winter (OctoberApril, Field): 12-hour days, 7 days/week on rotating schedule (2-on-1-off or 3-on-1-off)
Overtime Availability: Minimal in summer (40 hours/week) substantial in winter field work
Travel: Field mechanics operate within 200 km radius of mine site no logbook requirements
Work Environment: Mix of shop-based diagnostics/repairs and field service from mobile units no on-call requirements
