Public Works Superintendent / Heavy Duty Mechanic Community Government of Whati | Whati, Northwest Territories
Full-Time Permanent Position
Are you a skilled Heavy Duty Mechanic with leadership experience and a passion for serving northern communities? The Community Government of Whati is seeking a dedicated Public Works Superintendent / Heavy Duty Mechanic to lead municipal public works operations while providing hands-on maintenance and repair of the community's fleet and equipment.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the Senior Administrative Officer (SAO), you will oversee the delivery of essential municipal services, including:
- Water delivery and wastewater collection
- Road and drainage maintenance
- Solid waste management
- Municipal facilities and infrastructure
- Fleet and heavy equipment maintenance
- Public Works staff supervision and development
This is a unique opportunity to combine technical expertise with leadership responsibilities in a close-knit northern community.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Lead and coordinate daily Public Works activities.
- Supervise, mentor, and support Public Works staff.
- Ensure productive, effective, and safe delivery of municipal services.
- Coordinate contractors, suppliers, and government agencies.
Heavy Equipment Maintenance
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain municipal vehicles and equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance on loaders, graders, backhoes, water trucks, sewer trucks and other equipment.
- Troubleshoot diesel, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- Perform welding and fabrication as required.
Safety & Administration
- Promote a strong safety culture and regulatory compliance.
- Assist with budgeting, purchasing,
and asset management planning.
- Prepare operational reports and recommendations for management and Council.
Qualifications
Preferred Credentials
- Trade certification, diploma, or certificate in Heavy Duty Equipment Technology, Public Work Municipal Administration, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Journeyperson or Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician certification is a strong asset.
- Water treatment or water management certification is an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in public works, municipal services, heavy equipment maintenance, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Experience in northern or remote communities is highly desirable.

Requirements
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with air brakes
