The Water System Operator Assistant supports the Water System Operator in the safe, effective, and reliable operation and maintenance of the Ootischenia Improvement District (OID) water system.

This position works closely with the Water System Operator and Administrator to ensure the responsible management, operation, and maintenance of OID infrastructure. The Assistant Operator is accountable to the Water System Operator and, ultimately, the OID Board of Trustees.

The successful candidate will be expected to work towards and maintain the appropriate Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) certification through on-the-job experience and training.

Technical Duties

Under the supervision of the Water System Operator, the Assistant Operator will:

- Collect water samples hygienically for analysis by a provincially certified laboratory.
- Perform preventative maintenance and assist with repairs to pumps, valves, hydrants, reservoirs, pressure reducing stations, telemetry, and related equipment.
- Respond promptly to system alarms/emergencies, resident concerns.
- Install, maintain, and repair water service connections and related infrastructure.
- Assist the Water System Operator with other operational and maintenance activities as required

Administrative and Regulatory Duties

The Assistant Operator will:

- Maintain accurate daily logs, maintenance records, and other required documentation.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly reports for the Board of Trustees.
- Maintain and update records required to meet the conditions of the Interior Health operating license and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Assist with educating residents regarding water use regulations and conservation practices, maintenance other relevant information.
- Assist with emergency response and after hours call ours as needed.

General Duties and Responsibilities

The role is varied and provides hands-on experience in water distribution system operations,



preventative maintenance, equipment maintenance, emergency response, customer service, regulatory compliance, and general utility operations.

The Assistant Operator is expected to:

- Work safely and follow all applicable occupational health and safety requirements.
- Maintain a professional and respectful approach when representing OID.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Water System Operator or Board of Trustees.

Additional Requirements

- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with a satisfactory driving record and the ability to operate District vehicles and equipment safely.
- Mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and perform basic repairs and maintenance on pumps, valves, motors, hydrants, pressure relief systems, and related equipment.
- Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use email, MS Office, electronic recordkeeping systems, and water system monitoring software.
- Ability to read maps, drawings, service plans, equipment manuals, and operating procedures.
- Ability to perform physical work, including lifting and carrying equipment and materials, working in confined or restricted areas, climbing ladders and stairs, and working outdoors in all seasons.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions within established procedures and under the direction of the Water System Operator.

Recommended Experience

- Previous experience in water distribution, utilities, plumbing, mechanical maintenance, construction, or a related field is an asset but not required.

The OID will support relevant training and advancement opportunities to help the successful candidate build skills and certifications for long-term growth.

Compensation: $29-31 per hour to start, based on experience. Wages will increase as training and required certifications are completed
