There is a place for everyone to belong here.The Mission Statement is: The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.PositionJob Title: Withdrawal Management CounsellorShifts: Various ShiftsEmployment Type: Permanent Relief/CasualPosition Purpose SummaryThe Withdrawal Management Counsellor is responsible for providing direct clinical care to clients.ResponsibilitiesObserve, record, assess and manage the behavior of residents who are intoxicated, in withdrawal, or in crisis; monitor residentsand record significant changes in their level of functioning.Provide physical care/procedures as outlined in policy and procedures or directed by Manager.Document admission and discharge data, client service plans and progress toward goals, and any other significant information relating to quality care.Formulate a comprehensive client service plan (including discharge) in collaboration with the client.Educate residents about the effects of chemical dependence and substance use, along with the process of recovery.Provide emotional support and information regarding treatment options and make appropriate referrals.Provide clients with individualized assessments as outlined in the Admission and Discharge and Assessment tools provided by the Ontario Substance Abuse Bureau.Communicate client response to procedures and activities, and report any changes or adverse effects to the Manager.Provide individual and group counseling and facilitation and aftercare support, and provide support, counseling and education to families and other client supports.Identify and refer all medical emergencies to the Emergency Department when necessary.Maintain the contents, upkeep,



and tidiness of the supply room and ensure clients have adequate supplies of personal items including clothing.Help clients store, retrieve and secure their belongings during their stay.Perform regular rounds of the floor, including dormitories, bathrooms and lounges, and maintain a clean and safe environment.Advise the Manager of equipment problems or programming needs.Perform necessary clerical duties, data entry, report writing, answer the phone and relay messages as required.Participate in Quality Assurance programs as requested by the Manager and suggest improvements to efficiency, conditions or procedures when appropriate.Health and SafetyWork in compliance with OH&S; Act and Regulations and adhere to The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.Work closely with security to identify safety and security needs.Follow Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations; use prescribed safety equipment; report hazards, injuries or illness; and comply with employer requirements.Follow through on all safety and security procedures (including fire) as outlined in policy and procedures manual.External and Internal RelationshipsInternal: Work cooperatively with staff from various Centre of Hope departments; participate in regular staff meetings.External: Community, clients.Managerial/Technical LeadershipReports directly to the Withdrawal Management Manager or designate.Working ConditionsThe Supervisor sets the hours of work and schedule.Normal hours of work may vary and include a 1/2 hour paid meal break where applicable. Qualifications and CertificationsMinimum two-year Community College or University Degree in a Health or Social Service Program, with an addiction concentration, or complemented by other recognized Addiction Studies.Valid CPR and First Aid Certificate and Crisis Intervention training.Demonstrated observation, assessment, communication and withdrawal management skills.Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening satisfactory to The Salvation Army; screening throughCPIC or local police detachment may be required.May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.Experience and SkillsMinimum one year of prior related experience in addictions; Withdrawal Management experience is required.Knowledge of addiction and mental health concepts, pharmacology related to withdrawal management, relapse prevention, harm reduction and stages of change model.Experience in interviewing and counseling individuals and groups with substance use and dual disorders; using standard admission and discharge tools; familiarity with community agencies and self-help groups.Understanding of withdrawal progression, symptoms, and stages; strong computer skills including MS Office and data collection systems.Commitment to The Salvation Army mission and values.Skills and CapabilitiesAbility to work with people with substance use disorders in a supportive, non-judgmental manner; ability to work independently and in a team.Strong judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail.Excellent written and oral communication; confidentiality in all matters.Self-motivated, disciplined and qualified.CompensationThe target hiring range for this position is $28.89 to $29.32 with a maximum of $29.74.
