The Mechanical/Piping Engineer (Modularization) will be part of Hatch's growing Modularization team, supporting the development and execution of modular construction strategies for major industrial projects in the mining, metals, energy transition, and infrastructure sectors.
This role is ideally suited for early-career engineers with approximately 5+ years of experience in construction, field engineering, fabrication, commissioning, maintenance, module yard operations, or industrial project execution who are looking to expand their careers beyond traditional mechanical and piping design roles.
The Mechanical/Piping Engineer will work with engineering, construction, logistics, fabrication, and project teams to develop safe, practical, and efficient modular execution solutions that improve project delivery, reduce site work, and enhance construction productivity.
Key Responsibilities
Support the development and evaluation of modularization opportunities for mechanical and piping systems while ensuring compliance with applicable engineering codes, standards, and project requirements
Develop a strong understanding of project scope, construction strategy, execution planning, logistics requirements, and modularization objectives
Assist in the development of modularization studies, module definitions, transportation assessments, lifting strategies, constructability reviews, and installation plans
Support project teams in evaluating mechanical and piping systems for offsite fabrication, module assembly, transportation, and field installation
Review mechanical and piping designs from a constructability, module fabrication, transportation, and installation perspective
Develop the work plan for insertion into the Project specific execution plan and develop and maintain the Project's scope of work documentation and revise as required during the design evolution
Manage and review the engineering work packages associated with all deliverables and time-based functions to ensure that budgets and schedules are being met, and take corrective action if necessary
Participate in multidisciplinary workshops focused on modularization, construction planning, execution strategy, and project delivery optimization
Review and approve technical deliverables
Assist in the preparation and development of project specific procedures
Support the development of module yard execution strategies and fabrication work scopes
Represent the Mechanical/Piping practice in project engineering co-ordination meetings
Ensure coordination, between the Mechanical/Piping team and other disciplines of all activities being performed as the design evolves
Ensure that quality audits of engineering work are carried out in accordance with Project procedures and the quality assurance plan and maintain technical documentation
Participate in HAZOP reviews
Provide input during project planning, engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation, construction, and commissioning phases
Promote and maintain the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of engineering work
Adhere to and promote the Hatch corporate safety culture
Participate in site visits, fabrication yard visits, module yard evaluations, and construction planning workshops as required
Interface with fabrication contractors, module yards, logistics providers, construction teams, and owners to support project execution planning
Support the development of innovative modular construction and industrialization strategies that improve project safety, schedule certainty, and productivity
Qualifications and Experience
Approximately 5-8 years of experience in industrial construction, mechanical engineering, piping engineering, field engineering, fabrication, commissioning, maintenance, project engineering, module yard operations, or industrial project execution
Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university
Registered as an EIT/Candidate Engineer, actively pursuing professional registration, or eligible for registration in the applicable jurisdiction
Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in industrial project delivery and construction execution
Strong deliverable focus, ability to plan the work
A high degree of understanding of inter-discipline dependencies related to the discipline
Good understanding of procurement, contracting and commissioning methodologies
Sound knowledge of codes and standards applicable to the Project
Working knowledge of mechanical and piping systems in industrial facilities
Understanding of industrial construction practices and field installation requirements
Experience reviewing engineering deliverables from a construction, fabrication, maintenance, or operations perspective is an asset
Well-developed communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skill
Field engineering, site engineering, fabrication yard, construction, module yard, or commissioning experience is strongly preferred.
Preferred
Experience with industrial module fabrication, modular construction, heavy industrial projects, or equipment installation
Exposure to field construction planning, work packaging, construction sequencing, or commissioning activities
Interest in modularization, industrialization, project execution planning, logistics, and constructability
Experience working with contractors, fabricators, construction teams, or industrial operations personnel
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and collaborate across engineering, construction, fabrication, and logistics functions
Salary Range:
$90,000 to $120,000

Your individual compensation within this range will depend on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications and location.
