Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA)
Ontario
The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) is the national voice of public transit in Canada. Our members represent transit systems, businesses and organizations from across the country and are at the centre of a sector experiencing significant investment, growth and change.
CUTA is seeking an experienced Membership Pricing & Revenue Consultant for a six-month engagement to review our membership pricing structure and develop a sustainable, forward-looking pricing framework.
This is a hands‑on assignment for an experienced professional who can independently work through a pricing review from research and discovery through to modelling, recommendations and implementation planning.
The successful consultant will be expected to quickly develop a strong understanding of CUTA’s membership structure and annual cycle, determine what information is required, review historical and financial data, conduct relevant research and benchmarking, and develop a practical methodology for determining membership fees.
The objective is not simply to recommend new fees. CUTA is looking for a clear and sustainable approach to how membership pricing should be determined, calculated, maintained and administered going forward.
What You’ll Do
Understand the Current Model
Develop a thorough understanding of CUTA’s membership structure, categories and annual membership cycle.
Review the current fee structure, pricing methodology and how membership fees are calculated and adjusted.
Review historical membership, pricing and revenue information to identify relevant trends and considerations.
Examine the information, calculations and internal practices that support membership pricing.
Identify gaps or inconsistencies in the data, calculations or practices that should be addressed to support a consistent pricing methodology.
Conduct market research and benchmark membership fees, categories and pricing approaches used by relevant associations and membership‑based organizations.
Identify leading practices and alternative approaches that could be applicable to CUTA.
Assess the relationship between membership categories, member characteristics, value and pricing.
Consider the potential impact of different approaches on members, renewals and overall membership revenue.
Develop the Pricing Model
Develop potential membership pricing options supported by research, data and financial analysis.
Determine appropriate variables, formulas and calculation methodologies for establishing membership fees.
Financially model different pricing scenarios and assess their impact across CUTA’s membership categories.
Test proposed approaches against CUTA’s existing membership base.
Recommend a sustainable membership pricing framework and methodology.
Develop an approach for determining future fee adjustments so that the model can continue to evolve over time.
Strengthen How the Model Is Administered
Identify the information and controlled inputs required to calculate membership fees accurately and consistently.
Recommend practical changes to the supporting membership practices, calculations and information requirements needed to administer the new framework.
Define what membership information should be collected, maintained and updated to support pricing decisions and future analysis.
Document the methodology and calculations so that CUTA staff can consistently administer the model going forward.
Identify the system functionality required to support the recommended membership pricing model.
Recommend an appropriate platform, database application or other technology solution to support controlled inputs, calculations and ongoing administration.
Identify opportunities to automate fee calculations, annual adjustments and other recurring elements of the membership cycle.
Consider how the recommended solution could support membership renewals and invoicing and work with CUTA’s existing systems.
Provide practical implementation recommendations and clearly define the functionality required from a future technology solution.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for an experienced, analytical and hands‑on qualified who can independently take ownership of this assignment.
The successful consultant will know how to investigate an existing pricing structure, determine what information is needed, work with historical and financial data, identify gaps, conduct research and benchmarking, and translate that work into a practical pricing methodology.
Qualifications and experience should include:
Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing or redesigning pricing models,
fee structures or recurring revenue models.
Strong financial modelling and quantitative analysis skills.
Experience conducting market research, comparative analysis and benchmarking.
Experience with associations, membership‑based organizations, subscription models or other organizations with tiered or recurring pricing is strongly preferred.
Ability to independently understand existing business practices and determine what needs to change to support a new pricing model.
Ability to work with incomplete or dispersed historical information and determine what is relevant to the assignment.
Understanding of the data and system requirements needed to administer a pricing model effectively.
Ability to translate analysis into practical, implementable recommendations.
Solid written, verbal and presentation skills.
Education & Technical Skills
Post‑secondary degree in business, finance, economics, accounting, data analytics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including financial modelling, formulas, scenario analysis and working with large datasets.
Strong ability to organize, analyze and validate data from multiple sources.
Experience working with CRM, membership, financial or database systems.
Understanding of how structured data, controlled inputs and calculation rules can be used to support repeatable and accurate pricing.
Ability to assess technology solutions and translate business and pricing requirements into functional requirements for a database, application or platform.
Experience with data visualization or business intelligence tools is an asset.
The Right Profile
This engagement is best suited to someone who has personally built or redesigned pricing models and is comfortable working directly with the underlying data, calculations and methodology.
We are looking for a consultant who can independently figure out how the current model works, ask the right questions, conduct the necessary research and analysis, and develop a well‑supported approach for how membership fees should be determined going forward.
The successful consultant will be expected to work through the details and leave CUTA with a clear pricing methodology, documented calculations, implementation requirements and a practical path to administering the model on an ongoing basis.
