Police Cadet - Full Time
The Morehead City Police Department works hard to sustain a solid relationship with the community through a high level of customer service. The department is a multifaceted operation centered around the Patrol Division supported by several specialized teams. This includes, but is not limited to, the Support Services Unit, Criminal Investigations Unit, Narcotics Officers, School Resource Officers, Dive Team, and Special Response Team. In addition, community outreach is strengthened with programs consisting of After School Tutoring, Citizens Police Academy, Community Watch, D.A.R.E, Lunch Buddy, Senior Luncheon, Special Olympics LEO Torch Run, Youth Academy, and Volunteers and Interns.

The position of Police Cadet is unique by allowing on-hands Police training while simultaneously having general employment with Morehead City while completing Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) in preparation to become a police officer. This Police Cadet position offers reimbursement for training costs incurred for Basic Law Enforcement Training upon successful completion of probationary employment and credible years of service to the Morehead City Police Department.

Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, a Police Cadet will perform tasks in various divisions of the Police Department in conjunction with a formal training matrix program designed for career advancement in the law enforcement field; performs related work as assigned.

Participating successfully in the BLET formalized training program.

Performing clerical duties; keeping records, entering information into computer systems; answering the telephone and providing information and directions to the general public.

Processing information and preparing reports as assigned; submitting completed reports on all cases assigned; preparing a variety of correspondence,



and statistical and narrative reports; researching and analyzing information.

Learning to interpret and apply policies and procedures including Police Department policy manual, and related state and federal laws.

Learning standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system.

Effectively communicate both orally and in writing; establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with department personnel and city personnel.

Ideal Candidate

Have general knowledge of the role and function of a law enforcement agency, customer service, and office procedures and practices.

Have the ability to learn and understand police department rules, regulations, instructions, laws and policies; communicate orally with people of diverse education, social and ethnic backgrounds; write clear, legible and grammatically correct reports in English; gather, record, evaluate and draw logical conclusion(s) from verbal information; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of people; walk and/or stand for long periods of time; understand and follow oral and written instructions; organize and maintain records; and deal courteously but firmly with the public.

Valid Enrollment in a NC Basic Law Enforcement Training Program

Valid North Carolina Driver's License

Drug screening

Psychological assessment

Background check

Acceptance of the MCPD Training Agreement

Salary and Benefits
Starting Salary is $43,541 annually based on 2080 annual hours.
