Calgary Housing (CH) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary. CH is a purpose-driven social enterprise and the largest housing operator in Calgary, providing safe and affordable housing to more than 27,000 Calgarians.
As a Plumber Journeyperson, you will maintain, inspect, install, repair and replace furnace and hot water tank fixtures located in Calgary Housing multi-family residential buildings, including apartment towers, walk up apartment buildings and row housing. Primary duties include:
- Respond to service requests from residents, contractors, and internal teams to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, ERV/HRV, and boiler systems.
- Conduct cross-connection testing, leak detection, code-compliance inspections,
and identify unsafe or unauthorized property conditions.
- Install, repair, and replace plumbing fixtures, pumps, piping (including PEX and soldered systems), hot water tanks, furnaces, and related equipment.
- Assess underground and mechanical room infrastructure, including sewers and storm drains, and recommend cost-effective repair solutions.
- Prepare suites for move-ins; inspect move-outs, contractor work, and current mechanical installations.
- Clear blockages, repair drainpipes, install zone valves, and maintain on-demand boilers and make-up air systems.
- Design and implement preventative maintenance programs for mechanical and underground infrastructure.
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert for new builds and renovations, including writing scopes of work and supervising contractors.
- Complete administrative tasks such as electronic work orders, submitting test results, and attending pre-tender meetings.
Qualifications
- A completed Plumber Journeyman certificate or equivalent interprovincial Red Seal as recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board.
- At least 48 months of related post-ticket Journeyman experience is required.
- Preference will be given to applicants with furnace and hot water tank installation and repair experience, and those who have had commercial service experience.
- A Gasfitter "B" Ticket is required.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits, no current suspensions or charges pending.
- A Cross Connection Control Ticket and the ability to register with The City of Calgary will be an asset.
- Success in this position requires strong problem solving and interpersonal skills; the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a high call, customer-oriented work environment and adjust to changing priorities.
Working Conditions: This position will travel between residential buildings and is exposed to dirt, dust, noise, limited spaces, bodily fluids, pests, hot and cold temperatures.
Pre-employment Requirements
- An enhanced security clearance and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) will be conducted.
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
