Overview
Retrieve Physiotherapy is seeking a dedicated, patient-focused Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA) to join our clinic and support the physiotherapist in delivering high-quality, individualized patient care.
The successful candidate will assist with patient treatment, therapeutic exercises, modalities, patient education, clinic organisation, and administrative responsibilities. This position is ideal for someone who is compassionate, organised, professional, and comfortable working in a busy outpatient physiotherapy environment.
The PTA will work closely with the Registered Physiotherapist to ensure patients receive appropriate care while also helping maintain an efficient and welcoming clinic environment.
Duties
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Assist the Registered Physiotherapist with the implementation of individualized treatment programs under appropriate supervision.
- Guide patients through prescribed therapeutic exercises, including strengthening, mobility, stretching, balance, and functional exercises.
- Assist with exercise progression and ensure patients perform exercises safely and with appropriate technique.
- Set up and monitor patients for prescribed treatment modalities such as TENS, IFC, and other electrotherapy modalities, as directed by the physiotherapist.
- Assist with hot/cold therapy and other treatment preparation as required.
- Assist with equipment setup, cleaning, sanitization, and proper storage.
- Provide basic patient education regarding prescribed home exercises and general treatment instructions as directed by the physiotherapist.
- Monitor patients during treatment and promptly communicate any concerns, changes in symptoms, or adverse responses to the physiotherapist.
- Assist patients with safe transfers, positioning, and movement when required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe treatment environment.
- Help ensure appropriate infection-control and clinic safety procedures are followed.
- Support the physiotherapist during rehabilitation programs involving orthopedic, musculoskeletal, post-operative, and general mobility conditions.
- Maintain professional and compassionate communication with patients and contribute to a positive patient experience.
Administrative & Clinic Responsibilities
- Assist with patient reception and appointment-related tasks as required.
- Assist with patient scheduling, appointment confirmations, cancellations, and rescheduling.
- Maintain accurate and organized patient information and treatment-related documentation as directed.
- Assist with clinic documentation and administrative data entry using the clinic's electronic systems.
- Support billing and payment-related administrative tasks when required.
- Assist with insurance/direct-billing administrative processes as directed.
- Help maintain organized patient files and clinic records.
- Answer telephone calls, respond to basic patient inquiries, and direct clinical questions to the Registered Physiotherapist when appropriate.
- Assist with maintaining clinic supplies, including monitoring inventory and notifying management when supplies need to be replenished.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the reception, treatment, and exercise areas.
- Assist with general day-to-day clinic operations and administrative duties as required.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy and professional standards.
Qualifications
- Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA) certification is strongly preferred.
- Completion of a recognized Physiotherapy Assistant / Occupational & Physiotherapy Assistant (OTA/PTA) program is an asset.
- Previous experience in an outpatient physiotherapy, rehabilitation, chiropractic, sports medicine, or similar healthcare setting is preferred.
- Robust understanding of basic therapeutic exercises, rehabilitation principles, and patient handling.
- Comfortable assisting patients with exercise programs and rehabilitation activities.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach.
- Professional, reliable, punctual, and organized.
- Ability to work effectively under the direction of a Registered Physiotherapist.
- Ability to manage both clinical and administrative responsibilities.
- Basic computer skills and willingness to learn electronic medical records and scheduling systems.
- Experience with Jane or similar clinic management software is an asset.
- Previous experience with insurance/direct billing or healthcare administration is an asset.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism at all times.
- CPR/First Aid certification is an asset.
The ideal candidate is someone who is friendly, responsible, detail-oriented, and genuinely interested in patient care. The successful applicant should be comfortable working directly with patients while also contributing to the administrative and operational needs of a growing physiotherapy clinic.
PTA certification is preferred, but candidates with relevant rehabilitation, kinesiology, therapy-assistant, or healthcare experience may also be considered.
Pay: $19.00-$21.00 per hour
Expected hours: 35.0 – 40.0 per week
