DESCRIPTION
The Homelessness Society of the Bow Valley (HSBV) is a community-based charity with a mission to foster a Bow Valley community where everyone has access to safe, warm shelter and programs that support their needs. HSBV provides a low barrier shelter and programs with the goal to build trust and facilitate individuals' access to the local system of care. We are seeking an Executive Director to join our team and help lead the organization’s continued growth and local impact.
SUMMARY
The Executive Director for the Homelessness Society of the Bow Valley is responsible for the successful leadership and overall management of the organization in accordance with the strategic direction, and policies set by the Board of Directors. This position reports to the Board of Directors and will oversee and participate in program operations, public relations, and financial management.
The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the organization is operated incompliance with the Government of Canada Charities Directorate, Government of Alberta Societies Act, Municipal Regulatory Bodies, Public Health Department, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Employment Standards Act and other mandated legislative requirements. The Executive Director must present the organization in a professional and respectful manner, and model organizational values for all team members.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizational Leadership & Strategy
- Clearly articulate and uphold the vision, mission, values, and strategic direction of the organization.
- Ensure that the Board’s directives, policies, strategic plan, and organizational vision are effectively operationalized across all levels.
- Support the Board in the development and execution of the strategic plan, organizational policies, and long-term planning.
- Lead system mapping and identification of wise practices to inform strategic direction and internal improvements.
- Support the Board in planning and executing the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and other meetings as required.
Board Relations & Governance
- Act as a key liaison between the Board and staff, fostering strong, transparent communication.
- Support Board operations and ongoing Board development and engagement.
- Provide insight and recommendations to the Board for organizational growth, risk management, and sector trends.
- Support convening of Board members and Board onboarding and offboarding processes.
Operations & Compliance
- Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring they align with organizational goals and values.
- Maintain an open, collaborative, and mission-focused management approach.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations, including but not limited to Occupational Health and Safety, Canada Revenue Agency’s Charities Directorate, and Alberta Corporate Registry.
- Identify and implement technologies and systems to streamline operations and maximize impact.
Financial Management & Administration
- Oversee organizational finances and bookkeeping to ensure strong financial health and transparency.
- Support the streamlining of financial management systems and processes
- Collaborate with bookkeepers, accountants, and auditors to support preparation and completion of annual audits.
- Oversee administrative systems, including file organization, digital and physical record storage, and general office management.
People & Culture
- Oversee and support the Program Manager, including participation in hiring and staff performance reviews.
- Provide leadership in all human resources functions, including recruitment, onboarding, training, and performance management.
- Ensure all HR practices reflect a commitment to equal opportunity, accessibility, and inclusion.
- Foster a team culture rooted in equity, diversity, inclusion, and psychological safety.
- Promote staff wellbeing and encourage ongoing career development.
Programs & Impact
- Collaborate with team members to guide program design, including defining goals, eligibility, referral pathways, and performance metrics.
- Conduct and disseminate annual program reports using the established evaluation and measurement framework.
- Suggest and implement strategies for program enhancement based on research and community engagement.
- Build and maintain meaningful relationships with community partners, shelters, and change makers in the homeless-serving sector.
Fund Development & External Relations
- Oversee fundraising strategies and lead donor engagement, cultivation, and stewardship efforts.
- Support identifying and securing long-term, stable funding sources.
- Support the planning and execution of fundraising and community engagement events.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with key external stakeholders, including funders, government partners, community organizations, and media.
- Represent the organization publicly, advocating for its mission, programs, and impact.
REQUIREMENTS
- Over 5 years of experience in the non-profit sector as well as the human services or related field, preferably in leadership and management.
- Experience working with a Board of Directors.
- A recent police criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search.
- Must be able to work flexible hours.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead compassionately with empathy, and purpose.
- Excellent communication skills and able to connect with a diverse group of people.
- Experience in financial and risk planning management.
- Knowledge of local resources available in Bow Valley – Asset

COMPENSATION
- Salary: $80,000 to $90,000
- This position does not have benefits but will be provided with a wellness fund of $1,000 and a $25 monthly cell phone stipend which will be self-managed by the Executive Director.
